Welcome aboard '73s -
They tell me spring is on its way. Tree buds are beginning to sprout everywhere. Temperatures are starting to rise. Even my friend Jonathan Livingston Seagull has returned to his natural habitat, the sea. Good thing Mr. Groundhog didn't get an early peek at his shadow! With the advent of this new season, news seems to stuff the 'ole mailbox every now and then. It seems several mates have taken to the West in hopes of finding snow. Dick Reston and Matt Montagne are enjoying a year's reprieve from school, skiing Montana's best. Dick's a part-time professional ski patrolman at Bridge Bowl, while the other half of his time is spent blowing-up mountainsides. I guess he gets a lot of pleasure out of it. Meanwhile, Matt attends to the easier activities. He's dividing his time among geology consultant work, a Nordic ski team, and carving antler jewelry ... for the local BPOEs, I trust. Jim Cole is helping complete construction on Chet Huntley's Big Sky resort in its inaugural season. Eric Struhsacker's minefinding for a Western outfit. Bob Page is filling his days working on an environmental impact statement for Ski Yellowstone, a proposed ski resort. And Dave Clement eyes gold in the West as he is presently working on a trail crew at Sun Valley.
Donna Ferretti of football manager fame is making a big name for herself at Harvard Business School, but has taken time out to inform me that Caren Diefenderfer and Mary"Cheerleader" Mladinlov (madly in love?) are still hooked on the hockey team.
Fred Haas has become the local music man in Hanover. My irrepressible first mate Tom"T.D." Dewland and myself were recently the nautical guests of Fred's parents. Mr. Lowell Hass is a former president of the Washington, D.C., alumni club and still has long memories of the good 'ole days with the Barbary Coast, Dartmouth's answer to Glen Miller's Band.
John Nystedt, yet another habitant from the Yachting Capitol of the World, reports that after a near-starvation as an electronic music composer in Boston, he has wound up in the suburbs of Syracuse - Liverpool, to be exact, in a management trainee program for Travelers Insurance Co. If all goes well, John will wind up with an MBA in business from Syracuse University to go along with his account analyst training with Travelers. We all hope the umbrella weathers the storm.
Had a recent letter from Dick Berlin: "Assuming that heaven is situated somewhere near Hanover, Garson Fields and myself are currently suffering in a state of purgatory in Salt Lake City, Utah. Wow! No hard liquor, 3.2 beer, and fewer good lookers than all of New London, N.H."
Robin Hirsch recently left Chase Manhattan Bank to work for a deep sea diving firm in Miami Beach. Bill DeJong is working as an assistant manager at Taco Bell in Encino. DaveMorgans is weathering Chicago's South Side until he finishes his law degree at the University of Chicago. Tom Sweet is studying law in Boston, and manages every now and then to drop a line to his French connection whom he met during his foreign study sojurn last winter. Bruce Fredrickson is cracking a book or two at George Washington Law. Seung Kim is working very hard at Stanford Med. The warm breezes and the blue sea make it difficult to concentrate, but Seung assures me that it sure beats a New England Nor' Easter! Bill Shedden is a census taker in Boston. Tom Bray is lawyering at Indiana Law School. And London Bridge is falling down.
Men and women overboard: Bob Glosky, now at BU Law, plans to wed Becky Little in June. While John Roberts, having recently walked the plank with town honey Mardi in Crawfordsville, Indiana (?), plans to complete his graduate years at Tuck. Gathered together at the festive event were '73s Jack Zouhary (a recent returnee from Lebanon - the country, that is), Doug"Digger" Donahue, and Jim Metzler, who had an exceptionally fine season pitching for the Red Sox. Joe Rideout, studying for exams at UVA, was unable to make the affair, but sends his fondest "adieus."
Once again, that's all for news that's fit to print. When in doubt, write. You may be pleasantly surprised. Until we meet again, full speed ahead ...
