Ahoy, me swabbies!
Every now and then, me mateys, news comes across the deck to the effect that more and more men and women of '73 are going overboard. This month is no exception. Added to the list are Michigan Tech grad student (in geology) Gregg Hahn, University of Oregon Med School attendee Forrest Anthony (to Kathryn Lee Kinney, a 1974 graduate of Mt. Holyoke), and - finding it hard to believe - "Doc" Jeff Adam, a life-long member of the Ripley Raider Crew. May you all encounter rough waters on the high seas!
Making waves in the Boston environs are a few loyal '73s who manage to conjur up enough free time to devote to local alumni club affairs. Among them are Thomas B. Gibson, managing editor of the "Dahtmuth," a proper newsletter for Dartmouth alums who reside in Eastern Massachusetts, and Mike Capuano and Garrett Rasmussen, recently elected members of a new club in town called the Dartmouth Hub Club, comprising the townships of Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Newton, and Somerville.
Writes one of me mates: "Requesting your permission to come aboard, you'll notice that I've acquired the gold bars of a second lieutenant of the Corps of Marines, those roguish, global soldiers of the sea! [Aye, the Marine, first cousin of every sailor, who provides for us first rate taxi service, splendid firepower during landings, medics, corpsmen, and chaplains. A splendid lot ye are!]
"After ten weeks this past summer at Quango, Va., at the Officer Candidates School, I "as commissioned. I am finishing my last year at Albany Law, and will take the Bar Exam in July After that, I will return to Quantico for 26 more weeks of training in the military arts, and 'hen I will be sent to Naval Justice School in Newport, R. I., for two months orientation in the Uniform Code of Military Justice."
"Taps will be sounding soon, and it is time to mount the rack in the squad bay, after, of course, relieving myself in the head (at least there won't be any more five minute" (expletive deleted), shave, and shower" periods like at OCS). If ye be needing any boarding parties in the course of your next Carib float, I think I know some hard charging, highly motivated, highly dedicated, non-mistake making, paradogs and devil frogs for the mission. You'll have to provide the muskets and cutlasses. I know a few gunnery sergeants who'll keep the swabbies at the cannons during the attack." (2nd Lt. R.G. Conway Jr. U.S.M.C.R. '73)
Bob also relates that the old gang at Albany Law are all present and accounted for. BobRyan, after receiving rave reviews as the Devil in the musical Damn Yankees, produced by the Schenectady Light Opera Company last spring, spent the summer as a member of the constabulary (the local Shore Patrol) of his summer resort hometown in northern New Jersey. Kevin O'Shea finished very high in the class rankings after the first year there, and is currently in the writing competition for the Law Review. RichAnderson's alive and well and progressing towards his last year at Albany.
On a sad note, you have probably noticed the announcement of Robert Lewis Henry's death on August 28. Although I did not know Bob very well save for what I knew and saw of his outstanding performance on the football team, I am sure I speak for each member of the Class of 1973 when I express our deepest sympathies to his family and close friends. Too many of our classmates have left behind them too few years.
In closing, allow me to encourage you all to write the Captain when you have the chance. Please notice my new address. And remember: "Damn the torpedoes; Full speed ahead!" By your leave, Sirs, I remain, seamingly,
