Summer's comin', the livin' used to be easy, and after this short column, we are out of news. Let us hear from you.
Blake and Joan Hering took in the Dartmouth Horizon program in Hanover May 9 to 11. They also took their oldest daughter along with hopes that it might influence her decision to head east for college in '75. With five more to go, sooner or later the Herings will get one in Dartmouth but would like to start off with Number One. You can't hardly pick up a skiing magazine these days without seeing Put Blodgett's name or picture. His hike down the Appalachian Trail last fall must have really got him in shape. He took a third in the U.S. National cross country skiing and a fourth in the North American race at Big Sky, Montana.
Tom Ritner is still in Pittsburgh with Westinghouse as nuclear fuel reload sales manager. One has to have a long range view because almost everything they sell does not get shipped until after 1980 and much of it after 2000. Skiing in the East was a disaster this year (you're telling us?) but the Ritners had three great days at Snowbird. Tom is chairman of the Moraine Sailing Club. The family races two Sunfish. DeDe has opened a small antique and old bottle business in Pittsburgh and teaches ceramics at the School for the Deaf. Both of the Ritner boys play hockey and Tom reports their daughter buys clothes.
Bill Stubbs is operating an advertising agency in Portland, Me. He has some large property there. The office building is on the property front and he and Virginia and their four children live in the rear. Bill says it is very efficient and really convenient.
Another convenience-oriented worker is MaxWeisler who has forsaken the Long Island Railroad for a local legal practice in Lawrence, Long Island. He walks to work which means he gets in earlier, stays later and gets home sooner. Sheila and daughters, Frances and Nancy, love it.
Monk Robinson engineered the partnership of Possum Purse and "T" Best (Cornell '53). They bought a wholesale distributorship in the building materials field. Possum will be vice president and treasurer. Monk is the third director. Possum resigned as president of The Purse Company which has been owned for the past year and a half by a New York company. By the way, Monk and Thalia's daughter Kathleen has been accepted for the Dartmouth Class of '78.
Thanks to Fred Berthold's religion course and the time and support of his 50 partners and associates, Rollo Heyman has been elected president of Temple Israel. It's an 1,100 member Reform congregation in Dayton. Ralph has a flourishing law practice there. Mary Lou and the kids, Mickey 16, Cindy 14 and Ginger 7 all enjoy the Dayton area. Vacations have all been taken in the warm climates where they can focus on tennis and body surfing. Hot spots have included Barbados, Maui, Jamaica, and the Virgin Islands. They have reservations for the Harvard game this fall.
Fred Ward was transferred to Hoosier-Land in December. He was appointed manager of the J.C. Penney store in Gary.
Chuck Noll has been chairing the Alumni Council Ad Hoc committee charged with updating the Alumni Club system. They have had three meetings in New York and various other communication and are now ready to give their report in June at the annual Council meeting. Fred Whittemore is a sub-committee chairman and has also been at the meetings. Chuck was also chairman of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists national convention employment meeting in San Antonio in April. He also is coaching two little league baseball teams. In between all of this he is division manager of Davis Oil and they are drilling 50 wells this year in South Texas.
I had a quick business trip to West Palm Beach in late March and was fortunate enough to spend an evening at Lydia and John Dodge's home in Delray. John is putting up a fantastic condominium resort area there called Quail Ridge. I didn't know that there was that much yellow pine in all Florida nor that you could find some natural rolling terrain on which to build a championship golf course. The townhouses and homes that are being built are well designed, scattered in clusters on a very low density rate throughout the property and blend beautifully into the environment. Jean Vitalis was down with the kids visiting her mother but Bill was still in New York working. I had hoped to see Fred Chase up in Clearwater on the same trip but had to get back to Cleveland.
We've uncovered another racer who has not hung them up yet. Wally Ashnault was sixth in the veteran men's slalom at Cazenovia, N.Y., back in February. He was 10 seconds behind the winner, whom you might also know, Brooks Dodge.
Dave Replogle has accepted the job of directing and producing a new class directory. With Dave's background I wouldn't be surprised if it came out in hardback with a contract for paperback and a contract in hand for the movie rights.
I am very sorry to report the sudden death of Dick Davison. He had a fatal heart attack April 1 in Washington. Details appear in the obituary section. Our sincerest sympathy to his wife Louise, his five children, and parents.
President Kemeny spoke in Cleveland in late April. The morning session was a debate on the future of liberal arts education. The evening was a fairly complete report on the state of the College. Ed Parsons and I represented the Class.
We will have a class party during the Harvard-Dartmouth football game in Hanover on October 26. A block of 25 rooms has been reserved at the Suisse Chalet Motor Lodge on a first-come-first-served basis. That's a new lodge located in White River at the junctions of Route 5, Interstates 91 and 89. Singles, doubles, and two doubles are available. You must request a minimum of two nights with one night's deposit required. When making reservations, state that you are a member of our class. We will have a cocktail and dinner party that evening; details will be announced later.
That's it for this month. Remember to send a check to Hanover and some news to me.
