Spring has finally come, but the news from the past winter continues.
For the eighth year, the hoards of skiers from the Flatland states of Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska descended upon Vail during the third week in January for their annual running of the Flatland Challenge as well as other events. The members of the Flatland Ski Association again set a record for the number of racers competing in a single day at Golden Peak - 874 entered the Flatland Challenge race on January 18. This whole event got started back in 1964 by Bill Gilges. That first year the race was held in Crested Butte with three clubs in 40 races. Bill has raced in all but three of the events. This year he was race chairman and led Kansas City Ski Club to victory over the nine other clubs in a 25-gate giant slalom. KC led all clubs with 193 racers out of the record total. This event is the largest organized Alpine ski race in the United States. Bill finished 23rd on one course with a Vail Standard Bronze and an earlier Standard Silver metal which was less significant but still satisfying for a from the Flatlands who put on his first pair of Co-op hickories on the Hanover Golf Course when that early December snow fell in the winter of 1949. When Bill is not skiing he is a senior marketing representative for IBM in Kansas City.
Put Blodgett is another skier still hard at it. Put specializes in cross-country skiing and races in the veterans' class. He scored a first in the Silver Fox Trot race in Hanover back in January and a third in the Putney Special. At this writing, we don't have the results from February and March racing, but I'm sure that Put did well.
Peter Bridges has been in the Foreign Service since 1957. He has recently been promoted to Class II and assigned as chief of the division of Performance Evaluation in the State Department where he will be responsible for evaluation in promotion standards for the 6,000 employees of the Foreign Service at home and abroad. Peter and his family are living in Arlington, Va.
The First Boston Corporation has announced the election of Bob Malm as senior vice president. Bob is a member of First Boston's Corporate Finance Department. He joined the firm as a vice president last December from Reynold's Securities, Inc.
Cynny and Bob Robinson tried to claim "the class baby" back in 1971 only to have claims made from all corners that they were not alone in providing Dartmouth with the first offspring of our Class. They now come back with a new claim: a senior, son Stuffy, and a junior, daughter Barbara. Any competition?
Anton Philips moved from Holland to Mexico back in January. No news at this point as to exactly what he is doing.
Tom Dewey writes that he and Isabel are still enjoying northern Virginia living and the intrigues of survival in Washington. Tom is now director of National Accounts for the U. S. Postal Service which keeps him and his staff traveling extensively across the country. Tom has managed to check in with old friends in San Francisco on a frequent basis. In between, the family has found good skiing in West Virginia at the new Snowshoe area and also Canaan Valley. In March they had a week scheduled at Killington. All three of the Dewey daughters are very active in competitive swimming and basketball which keeps Isabel busy officiating.
Hank Fry's reported "battle of the bulge" has evoked more comment. Hank Edler says he doesn't feel as badly as he looks at his grey head in the mirror. He also wrote, "It hardly seems possible that our children have grown up so fast or that so many years have gone by since our Hanover experience. Denver is a great place to be in the real estate business as several firms are moving people into the area. One such move is a new office being opened by Stone and Webster, a large power engineering firm from Boston which enables me to do a lot of reminiscing about Boston and New England. Anyone coming to Denver, please give me a call."
That's about all the news for this month Please let us hear from you.
