In early December we had a real gang in Hanover for the 141st meeting of the Dartmouth Alumni Council. Blake Hering had just retired as president of that august body, but has been appointed to co-chair a committee to study the entire structure of the Alumni Council, to investigate and evaluate its effectiveness and how well it represents the alumni. The council has judged itself as not being effective enough in its communications. Dick Dunham, who is chairman of the athletic committee, gave a cocktail party for all of the '53s in Hanover at his house on River Ridge overlooking the Connecticut. Among those present were PaulPaganucci, Bob Lambert, Bill McCarthy, Joanand Blake Hering, Else and Chuck Luker, and yours truly.

Have you seen the new Wrangler jean ads? It's all macho western and no pretty derrieres. Ed Boyer, executive vice-president of Dancer, Fitzgerald and Sample, is in charge of the account.

Tom Dewey's nine-digit ZIP code is being batted back and forth, as you have undoubtedly read. I'm certainly convinced that it would be cost-effective and help move the mails faster.

Len Gochman is featured in "The Survivor" on Broadway at the Morosco Theater. The play is based on the experiences of a teenage gang of Warsaw inhabitants who resisted the Nazi invasion and ran a smuggling ring in order to keep food, medicine, and clothing flowing into the ghetto.

Edie and I spent five days in February down at Quail Ridge, which is John Dodge's development in Delray, Fla. It is a wonderful, friendly place with two golf courses and what seems like a million tennis courts. John and Lydia have a beautiful home in Ocean Ridge overlooking the intercoastal waterway. The Quail Ridge development is finished and John is already deep into Piper's Landing, which is a planned community up in Stuart, consisting of 585 acres, 305 homes, a championship golf course, and a private golf club.

Joan and Blake Hering were part of the Oregon delegation at the inaugural celebrations in Washington. Dick Dunham was there as part of the New Hampshire group. Blake wrote that it was a thrilling experience. In addition to all of the festivities, Peter Bridges arranged a tour of the State Department and its incredible state rooms which are used for entertaining royalty, heads of foreign governments, etc. It also has probably the finest collection of American antiques anywhere in the world. Blake said that the prevailing feeling among everybody is that we are on an upbeat and that America will get the job at hand done. When Mark Hatfield asked over 150,000 Americans to stand just prior to the president-elect's inaugural speech and hold hands and sing "God Bless America," there was not a dry eye in the entire audience. That was the type of scene that they experienced throughout the entire four-day period.

Bob Henderson has been designated chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Of course, he continues as president and chief executive officer of Itek Corporation.

Well, that's about it for this month.
