Wow! There is a bunch of news to pass on What a summer!
In May, the Dartmouth radio station, WDCR, celebrated its 25th anniversary. It became the first self-supporting commercial AM station operated entirely by students when it succeeded WDBS in 1958. The 25th activities included seminars and forums with alumni and students. Bill Beutel, a senior reporter with ABC News, and Reese Schonfeld, former president of Cable Network News, both participated.
Bobby Douglass was recently chosen to be a member of the board of trustees. He joins Bob Henderson on that hard-working and dedicated group. Bobby is currently executive vice president in charge of strategic planning and legal affairs for the Chase Manhattan Bank.
In June, Dick Lombard was present at the cornerstone-laying ceremony for the Hood Museum of Art. Dick has just finished his term on the board of trustees and is now chairman of the board of overseers for the Hopkins Center and Hood Museum of Art. That facility will be an impressive addition to the campus visually and intellectually.
During the June Alumni Council meeting, Blake Hering received the Dartmouth Alumni Award on behalf of the outstanding work he has done in business, in community affairs in Oregon, and in service to the College. Chuck and Elsa Luker had a small cocktail party for Blake. Among those present were Dick Dunham, Bob and Mary Longabaugh, Dick Loewenthal, Don Goss and daughter Holly, Bill McCarthy, Russ and Margery Cook, Fred and Molly Carleton, and Chuck Noll and his son Rob, who were in the East visiting colleges. Chuck, by the way, has started his own company in the oil and gas industry. It's called Frio Exploration Company and is doing well.

At graduation time, Dick and Vivian Cahn hosted a cocktail party and dinner for the families and friends of the 18 sons and daughters of '53s who were in the class of'83. George Krall said that it was a very special event during a very special weekend.
Ron Lazar's swan song with the Alumni Fund was a herculean effort, with the help of 138 assistant agents and 541 contributors. We managed a tie for first place. One donor or one dollar would have made a difference. Bernie Sudikoff, Chuck Luker, Tom Bloomer, Don Goss, and Dick Fleming were particularly instrumental in making the campaign a success. As many of you know, this tough act will be followed by "Black Al" Collins. He is going to need plenty of help. The first 600 volunteers will get an open charge account at Allen V. Collins Ltd.
And then in August, it was Nantucket Island. Twenty six classmates and a total of 84 people were involved in the best mini-reunion there's ever been. A giant Nor'easter put a crimp in the beach activities, but that was hardly noticed with all of the warm feeling, strong fellowship, and good times. International distance award went to Nancy and Jungle John Thornley, who came from Rome. North American honors went to Yolande andDave Salter, who flew up from their new home in Eleuthera. No contest was Dick Davenport, who runs the Harbor House where we had our banquet. Nan and Al Collins did an incredibly outstanding job organizing the entire weekend, entertaining us in their home, and taking care of every detail with a big assist from sons Wylie '83, Tris '86, and Jed. Janetand Jay Montgomery and their sons Peter '84 and Phillip had a terrific brunch on Sunday. Read the " '53 Out" for complete details.
