Class treasurer Jack Roberts, having harvested a fine crop of vegetables from his 10' x 10' garden at his home in Southbury, Conn., has now sown dues bills over the wide U.S.A. area and is already gathering in the sheaves including the voluntary tax-deductible contribution for the Memorial Book Collection room in Baker Library. An early return of additional dues will make life easier for our treasurer who does so much for the Class.
Word of Bob Wilson who lives on Packanack Lake, Wayne, N.J., comes from Bob Cleary who learned he retired in 1970 from Curtis Wright and now spends his time with golf, bowling, occasional work around the place, and fishing with a free license provided by New Jersey for those 70 or over. (23 other '26 Jerseyites should take note.) Bob and his wife vacation in Dorset, Vt., which, Bob, is not far from Hanover, come June 11-13, 1976 for the 50th Reunion.
If Al Morris lived in New Jersey he couldn't fish for free until Feb. 18, 1976, and anyone mathematically inclined would agree that in 1922 when he entered Dartmouth he was 16 years old - thus being in the same category as Dick Lattimore and Oz Fitts who have already pointed out this fact. Actually Al lives in Aiken, S.C., so he hasn't lost out on a free land-locked N.J. salmon. Even though Al is a retired M.D. he has a medical license, but says his practice is limited to helping Red Cross with its blood donor program.
Dean and Enid Chamberlin were written up recently in USIA World alumni notes (Dean being a retired U.S. Information Agency official) with a picture depicting his "Book Cellar" operations in Freeport, Me., where nostalgic out-of-print fiction, juveniles, New Englandia etc. are featured. Dean has been a prime supplier of illustrated books published in New England from 1769-1869 for the 1926 Memorial Book Collection. In his search for these treasures at book sales, auctions, thrift shops, Dean acquired many non-qualifying volumes which led to his interesting basement business. He also does book reviews for the PortlandTelegram, the local T.V. station, and still finds time to garden. Last May Dean had a call from Bob Williams, LaVerne, Calif, telling of the death after a long illness of his wife Cappy. Always close friends, Dean had introduced Bob to Cappy. The Class sympathizes with Bob in his loss, and is hopeful that he will carry out his previous plans to be at the 50th.
Probably the most eminent horticulturists in the Class, Chuck and Nat Webster visited at Ghent, Belgium, the Floriade - the great Floral Festival, which is held every five years. The king and queen of Belgium attended the opening ceremonies. The Websters, who were with the Buildings of Britain, environmental group, also visited several castles and chateaux in the Brussels area.
Other springtime news being held for fall release: on St. Patrick's Day Herb and FranRedman thought to remember their friends in Boston by mailing a joyous card from Martinique where the weather was quite unlike that available in Braintree. Since then Herb has been hard at work on the 50th Reunion committee.
Harry Weare has advised his new address is Warwick, R. I., to be.nearer his son and family who live there, and inquired of the secretary whether other '26ers lived in Rhode Island. Reply has been made that Tuff Hill lives in Cranston and Carroll Peavey in Westerly, and Harry has been commissioned to make sure all three will be at the 50th. Any other similar inquiries will be more or less expeditiously handled by your friendly secretary!
Paul Ide had a visit during the summer in Lyndonville, Vt., from fraternity brother BillShaw '27 and as a result the 1926 media has now caught up with Paul, which we hope will keep him posted on all class activities.
Our latest data on Art and Inez Wilcox, Greenwich, N.Y., dates back to early summer activities which included attendance at an interesting Glens Falls Dartmouth Alumni Club meeting addressed by Prof. Wiencke of the Classics Department, and a trip to New Orleans via the Shenandoah Valley. We are looking forward to Art's news gathering this fall.
The hard-working (?) 50th Reunion committee - at least Russ Clark and Stew Orr, cochairmen, work hard - has already put together a tentative program for the class activities on June 11, 12, and 13, 1976. In less than eight months we will meet in Hanover for our "Finest Fiftieth" - it is not too soon to plan to be there!
