The 35th Reunion will be held in June, 1977, and Dutch Cotton has just agreed to be its chairman (having been gently dragooned by a committee headed by Class President Ed McMillan). Long interested in class and college affairs, Dutch lives in Bedford, N.H., is a past president of the New England Council and vice president-treasurer of Edgcomb Steel. He was class secretary in 1967-'72 and will begin to crank up matters shortly with a committee to be named and a number of early decisions to be made in Hanover. A special Alumni Fund effort will be made for '77, with a chairman for that to be announced.
Encountered amid the pelting rains of the Penn game: Don and Pat Stillman, Dutch and Caryl Cotton, Lou and Barbara Young, Jim and Mary Morgan, Bud and Pat Hart, Bruce Friedlich, George and Mildred Thompson, Marston and Nancy Gibbs, Ed McMillan, Vic Schneider, Austie Baker, Howie and Joan Wilson, with Frank and Shirley Simpson hosts for a rousing fall reunion party at their inn, Dexter's, at Sunapee, N.H.
I hadn't seen Dick Oughton for 35 years, but he and family joined in the pre-Penn-game picnic - he had changed so little in appearance despite the decades that I blew my selfintroduction completely, a red-faced secretary in search of a sure formula for quick recognition. Originally from the Chicago area, Dick has long been associated with a bank in Dwight, Ill. A daughter and son-in-law live in New England, that and continuing interest in Dartmouth drawing Dick and China to Hanover.
Lou Young presented a financial report at a meeting at Dexter's and here goes, with figures up to 8/31/75: Income, dues, $3,426; bank interest, $873.12; total $4,299.12 over preceeding 12 months.
Spent: Alumni Magazine subscriptions, $2,569.70; dues campaign, mostly postage, $124.23; newsletter, $422.35; supplies to help all projects including Alumni Fund, $20.50; Harvard Game 1974 mailing and posters, $186.97; "Life After Dartmouth" career counseling for students class project, $461.31 (postage, posters, misc.). Total outgo, $3,785.06. Surplus, $514.06.
Resources: checking account, $325.46. Savings accounts including CD, $16,347.21 (includes $731.27 in money from 30th Reunion, with accumulated interest, to help pay for the 35th). Resources include around $100 on deposit at Baker Library to cover purchase of Memorial Books, the program in which special books wanted by the library are bought, each in the name of a departed classmate.
At the meeting of class members at Dexter's it was agreed that: 1) the dues should remain at $10, and the amount discussed at the 35th Reunion: 2) the "Life After Dartmouth" careers counseling will be continued, in early 1976; 3) New regional organization for 1976 Alumni Fund was presented by Class Agent Bud Hart; 4) the matter of continuing the Memorial Books program to be discussed at the 35th.
The latter was started in the immediate post-WWII period as a means of carrying on a suitable memorial and helping the library. The class financial resources, it was brought out at the Penn game weekend meeting, constitute a wasting trust, with income gradually tapering down and expenses for the present memorial, or any other selected, steadily rising. Ideas on other or alternate memorial projects are welcome. Our budget for the Magazine includes free subscriptions for widows and they have always been guests of the Class at reunions.
Good note, now that he has started settling into civilian life, from Jack Meyer, following retirement from the Air Force as a full general and SAC Commander: "Am at 4314 Marina City Dr. #420C, Marina del Rey, Calif. 90291. presently employed with R&D Associates, a California-based firm engaged in high technology studies for the Dept. of Defense, other gov't agencies and civilian contractors. I am a director of the company and a member of the executive council. Mary and I are living with our 14-year-old, Martha, on the water here, part of Greater Los Angeles, and spend our weekends working on - or sailing on - our 32' auxiliary sailboat. Daughter Chris - born in Hanover - lives in KC Mo. and is the mother of our two grandchildren. Son John graduated from the Air Force Acad, and is a Ist lieut. pilot, flying fighters out of England. Son Michael is attending grad school at Texas A&M. Maggie living in Hartsville, Ala., with her new husband." All join me in wishing you well in your new home and new endeavors, Jack - and that boat's store of foul weather gear would have fetched a bonny rental rate during the Penn game's downpour.
Dick Locke advised he's moved from Conn, to 285 Diablo, Green Valley, Ariz. 85614, and wanted to know if Pete Broberg, Gus andStuart's alumnus son, had beaten the Red Sox last season (he did, several times, and in general made himself an effective pest toward opposing batters) ... Jim Kelso has been named a vice president of Investors Bank & Trust Co., Boston . . . Roy Rowan's new book, The FourDays of Mayaguez, is being praised by reviewers.
