Award for Drechsel '36
April 1975

Ed Drechsel '36 was given the Alumni Award at the late-February annual dinner of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Northern California and Nevada in San Francisco.

Ed has been the West Coast correrespondent for U.S. News and World Report since 1969 after having been regional editor for the West Coast for the magazine from 1948-69 and an editorial representative in New York and London from 1942-48. From graduation until 1942 he was with the Standard Oil Company in payroll and industrial relations. His award citation reads in part:

"You have been in the Bay area for 26 years and you have not vegetated. ... You were elected president of the District PTA - the first male president, which is a switch - trustee and chairman of the Reed Union School District, member of the Belvedere City Council, and mayor of Belvedere. You have been a Boy Scouts Cub Master, a Sunday School teacher, choir member, lay reader, vestryman, and trustee in your church. As a member of the Economic Round Table of San Francisco you won the Oscar twice, but your footprints are not recorded in cement at Grauman's Chinese Theater in recognition of that honor.

"Your contributions to the College have been equally impressive. You were president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Northern California & Nevada and a member of the Alumni Council. Always an enthusiastic advocate of the College's continuing education program, you were instrumental in organizing the first California Dartmouth Alumni Seminar and a significant member of the discussion panel which is so essential to the success of the Seminar.

"You have been a class agent, a member of the local executive committee of the Third Century Fund, and active in enrollment work. You are a director and have been president of the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California.

"In grateful recognition of your continuing service to the College and your community, we are proud to give you the Dartmouth Alumni Award."
