The following members of our Class whose birthdays fall in October were born under the sign of Libra, the Balance: Humphries, Kehayas, and Parker.
They are hereby entitled to all benefits which accrue to this auspicious circumstance and to the congratulations of all the members of the Class.
In response to our birthday greetings, VogieStiles writes: "I enclose a color snapshot of Jane and me taken on our 60th wedding anniversary. We went to our grandson's wedding in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on July 10. There was a big crowd but the weather was fine and we enjoyed the trip. The young couple will live in Amherst, Mass., after they return from a trip to Europe.
"I was glad to hear that your pace-maker is working all right and I hope that you are enjoying a good summer in spite of the surgery.
"I have not heard from Herb Austin or AbeNewmark for quite some time but I trust that they are still around and healthy or we would have heard."
Jim Wulpi writes from his home in Fort Wayne, Ind., "Many thanks for your remembrance of my 87th birthday. Yeh, they do seem to come around pretty often!
"Perhaps a short resume of my life since the days at Dartmouth may be interesting to some of our classmates: While I was still in high school I had done some building and flying of gliders and consequently I was very much interested in flying generally and firmly believed that some time in the future flying would be the principal mode of transportation. Obviously my dream has come true.
"Directly after college I became connected with the Dupont Co., Explosive Div., as salesman. In late 1917 I went into the Army Air Force, was discharged late in 1918, and immediately went back with Du Pont.
"By 1928 airlines were springing up all over and the government was awarding air mail contracts. I was associated with two small companies and, in 1930, went with Trans World Airlines. In the early days I, with six others, handled the NYC office. Later did new route survey work for them. After being District Sales Manager at various locations here in the U.S. I was sent to the Near East to open offices, train personnel, etc., as we had permission to fly around the world. Worked through Arabia, India, Ceylon, and headed for China, but the Communists beat me to it there. Returned to the States in 1950 and became Dist. Sales Mgr. at various locations.
"I retired in 1957. Now golf seems to have become my main activity since then, and I live across the street from a course here in Fort Wayne, but spend my winters golfing either in Sun City, Ariz., Spain, Portugal, Morocco, or one of many other places around the world. Tough life! My health holds up wonderfully and I expect to follow the little ball around for another ten years."
The name "Red Wing" seems to arouse some faint latent memories of our youth, but for SamSheldon it is the name of his home town. Sam sends us, "Many thanks for your letter of congratulations on the advent of my recent birthday. Although I have little to recall of 'ancient days,' I had an especially interesting experience just before last Christmas.
"I was invited to fly to Honolulu to meet a Navy supply ship just returning from the far East and join up for the rest of the way to San Francisco. The ship was the Wichita, and during our return trip of eight days we refueled the Kitty Hawk, a large plane carrier, and the Kiska. an ammunition carrier, all without stopping, with our ship, the Wichita, in the middle. The only connections between our ship and the two outside ships were the fuel and ammunition lines carrying the cargoes from our ship to the other two. The two outside ships were obliged to maintain their positions with our ship which set the course and with no lines except those transferring the cargoes.
"Watching this operation was a truly fascinating experience. During the time that we were passing fuel oil to the Kitty Hawk and ammunition to the Kiska we were passing ammunition to both ships by helicopter also. I timed this latter operation and it took only two minutes to make a complete transfer, which indicated the amount of practice which had been devoted to securing such extraordinary efficiency."
