The fall has arrived, and as you read this you may well be thinking of the Dartmouth-Harvard game which is an event of the recent past. The summer has ended, and I have begun my fifth and final year as secretary of our class.
First things first, and I remind you that although Dave Friend and I enjoyed Acapulco last year, our trip to Hawaii this year will cost even more! Seriously, the class dues campaign is here again, and each class member should consider that these dues are used to subsidize the class subscription to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, the class newsletters, mailings, and all other class expenses. There is no intent of amassing a fortune in the class treasury and, in fact, if the number of '72s paying dues increases, it will be possible to hold the line on dues, or even see them decrease. The more of us who send in our dues, the less the dues will be.
It would appear that John "Too Tall"Fieldsteel will be paying his dues since he was married to Karen Seidler in Northampton, Mass., on September 18. Karen is Jan Seidler's (spouse of Dave "Eagle" Engle) sister, and to think they were both my roommates! If there were another Seidler sister, my bachelorhood would be in jeopardy! More on the array of bozos at that bash next month, as well as those present at a North Ferrisburg, Vt. housewarming for Bill "Mouse" Anderson, who is still giving jovial "F"s to his math students at St. Michael's College.
Joe Leslie has been named offensive line coach at the University of New Hampshire, and it's been rumored that he mumbles "Just me and you, Meldrim" over and over. Gary Dicovitsky has left the Big Green and Hanover for a position as head basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Loyola College (Baltimore). Dico saw some successful rebuilding at Dartmouth and benefited from tough times, such as periods with no head coach, in Hanover which would seem to indicate success at Loyola. The Class expresses its best wishes to both Jo-Jo and Dico.
Vance Kenlan, third year at North Carolina Law, reports that Pace Poag's wedding last May attracted such notables as Brad Poynter, who with Harvard MBA in hand has headed for Houston and investment banking, and PeterBetts, a recently promoted employee of Aetna Life & Casualty Co. in Hartford, Conn. GeoffStephens attended prior to commencing his third year at Florida Law, an institution from which Kirk Friedland graduated last June. Kirk has taken the bar exam and when last spotted was job-hunting. As for the groom, Pace is still a radio broadcasting exec in Greensboro, N.C. where he and his wife Nancy will reside. Nancy and Pace both have MBAs from North Carolina, so it's obvious that one or the other will get the business (?).
Tom Stebe recovered from his broken writing hand and jotted a note relating that he and Beth are still living in Wayland, Mass., with Erica (1), who is cute as a button and looks like Beth. Tom has started a master's of education program at Harvard. John Musser and longtime companion Camille have settled in Cambridge. John is still with Arthur Anderson, and, unbeknownst to Camille, is having an affair with a submissive computer.
Jack Anderson reports that a double Ph.D. in Slavic languages and humanities at Stanford has landed him a job as a bartender in San Francisco. Wayne Pirmann is alive, well, and living as a soccer ball in Michigan. Actually, he owns and operates Michigan Soccer School - boarding and day clinics for boys and girls. In addition, he is president of the Michigan Soccer Coaches Association. Maris Lidalia, Wayne reports, has graduated from DePauw Law School and Byron "Jack" Bang has returned from a Peace Corps stint in Korea and with Chris Carey has headed for the west coast to seek fame and females.
Chris Brewster is an assistant attorney general in Missouri and worked on the Missouri abortion brief which was argued before the Supreme Court last term. He took time out, however, to be best man at Tim McKeever's wedding held on a boat in the Potomac. Tim is a legislative assistant to Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska.
Ghort summered well, despite the plight of the Red Sox. He did shed a tear, as I did, when he heard of the death of Joan Hier, the alumni editor for this magazine. A very special lady, she put up with, and even feigned amusement over, the ramblings of a demented garbage disposal, and the struggling young attorney who claims title to him. She was an imaginative, openminded lady, whom Ghort and I will remember long after our gears rust....
