Hazen Jones and his wife Rena spent the summer in Sebasco, Me., as usual. All their children and grandchildren were with them to celebrate Rena's 81st birthday. Their older son Kimball '46 and his family spent most of the summer in Europe. They visited England, Scotland, and France, avoiding hotels by staying in private homes. Bones attended a birthday party in Boston for Duckie Drake 'O2 who is enjoying good health. Those in attendance were older Dartmouth alumni, so it was a very quiet party.
Helen Lowell (Jim's widow) is back home in Warsaw, Va., after a four months' trip visiting relatives and old friends from Maine to California. Helen will celebrate her 88th birthday in October. How she does get around!
I have a letter from the Montana Veterans' Home in Columbia Falls, Mont., where Horace Chadbourne lived the last few years, saying he died in his sleep May 29 and the body was taken to Great Falls for cremation. The Veterans' Home sent me a long obituary which appeared in the Columbia Falls newspaper. I have sent a copy to the College and to Art Lord for "Tenner Topics."
Plneo Jackson wrote a long letter in October saying he and his daughter Katherine had just spent three weeks in Maine visiting old friends and distant relatives. He wanted Katherine to visit many of the old favorite spots they visited when she was a little girl. Katherine never married and spent her life traveling all over the world with the Red Cross. She plans to be with Pineo all winter. Pineo's two sons are deceased.
Harold Sprague writes that except for some arthritis in his knees he is in good health. His wife Olive died January 30, 1970, and he has lived alone in his South Easton home since with an assortment of housekeepers. He drives his own car in the daytime - not at night. Harold has long been interested in Masonic work, is a 33rd degree Mason and still active. He sold his business in Brockton 16 years ago and retired to South Easton.
We received a letter from Ken Phelps late in October saying that Ora had another fall and broke her hip and arm. She is now in Stanford Hospital for repairs.
