Thanks to Pete Kenyon, I have just received the minutes of the class executive meeting, held in Hanover during the Harvard/Dartmouth weekend. Can you believe it - the Executive Committee is already planning for our 25th reunion, Dave Mandelbaum appointed a preliminary planning committee consisting of John Gillespie, Dick Page, and Pete Barker. It seems to me that Mandy is rushing our aging a little bit too fast - but I guess that time is coming.
George Voss has retired as head class agent after three extremely successful years. George has led the Class to new heights in alumni fund giving and participation. He deserves an enormous amount of praise and thanks from all of us. Terrific job, George! Steve Mullins is our new head class agent. You can all expect to be hearing from him soon and regularly!
An article in the Boston Herald American referred to Dan McCarthy's new adventure in education. Dan, professor of management at Northeastern University and coordinator of Northeastern's Human Resources Group, left in August for a year-long educational experience in Greece. Dan will help to launch a new program at the Deree-Pierce College in Athens. It will be one of the first schools in Greece to offer a master's degree in business administra- tion. The program is almost identical to Northeastern's part-time M.B.A. program, which allows persons in the business world to come back to school and improve their knowledge and skills and carry their expertise back to the business community. It sounds like a major undertaking and one that Dan is most capable of following to a successful conclusion.
The Schering-Plough Corporation has announced the appointment of Fred Page as vice president and general manager of Animal Health Products, Schering Division. Fred joined Schering in 1957. Since that time he has obtained an M.B.A. from NYU while holding numerous positions with Schering Laboratories and Animal Health. Fred and his wife Miriam and their four children live in West Caldwell, N.J.
Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York has announced the election of Dave Dyche as senior vice president and head of the Corporate Research Department. Dave joined the bank in 1958, after receiving his M.B.A. at the Wharton School. He was elected a vice president in 1966. Congratulations, Dave! While we're speaking of bankers, another one of our number has been elevated in a major bank. Manufacturers Hanover has announced that Frank Wright has been elevated to senior vice president and head of the Corporate Region IV in the bank's Metropolitan Division. It looks like if you need money in New York, you have a choice of '54 bank executives to see. A recent announcement in the Wall Street Journal indicated that Dick Pearl has become a general partner in the First Manhattan Company. If the above announcements indicate that Frank and Dave are in the money, Dick apparently has found a successful way to invest it.
I got a super letter from Bob Levine, which I quote in full here: "I know you are always looking for news in your version of' Dear Abby' so I thought I'd put a few items into your hopper: Dick Lewis is giving up lobstering in Portland to try the fishing in Australia. Yes, he's no longer going to be the partner in charge of Ernst & Ernst in Portland, but he is going to be heading up our management consulting services division in Sydney, Australia. He and Audrey will be gone for at least three years. They've left their daughter Tracy as a newly enrolled freshman in Skidmore, but the rest of the family is going to trade the 'down east' for the 'down under.'
"I saw Peter Johnson and Carolyn in Hanover attending the 75th anniversary of Amos Tuck. Pete and Carolyn came in all the way from Boise, Idaho, last spring for the event. Instead of my usual commute home to New Jersey, I took a Penn Central train to Stamford one night and sat down next to none other than Dean Hildebrandt, who's vice president of the now newly-privately-owned consulting firm of Booz, Allen. Dean specializes in the insurance industry.
"And as a final bit of news, I've just been appointed partner in charge of our merger and acquisition consulting services (we call it Corporate Growth Planning!) for our Eastern district. I'm doing a little more traveling than I've been used to, but it looks like a really exciting area to be in, now that the economy is picking up some steam again."
If all the rest of you would take some time out to drop a few lines like Bob did, I wouldn't even have to write a column. Thanks a bunch, Bob, and congratulations on your new position.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. See you next year.
