With Christmas just around the corner all '75's should be thinking of at least two things - class dues and letters to your class secretary. Please don't forget either of these two itmes. Bob Hittle, class treasurer, has sent out his plea for dues and it should be heeded. Among other things, your dues are accumulated over the years to provide for the festivities at reunion time!
Letters have been scarce at best to the class secretary. It would be appreciated if you all included in your Christmas list of things to do a brief note to Rob Rees-Jones or myself so that future editions of the '75 class notes will be loaded with news of interest to everyone.
Dan Nelson has returned to Hanover and will serve as the class notes and obituary editor of the Magazine. Dan was married in June to Deborah Bacon (Vassar '75) at the Mt. Moosilauke Ravine Lodge. Bob Basset '72 was the best man and '75's in attendance included Bill Brinton, Jay Leiter, Calvin Meredith, and Dave Rettig.
Another '75 who has returned to Hanover is Greg Hakenen. Greg, who has been working as a paralegal assistant in the Chicago law firm of Jenner and Block, was named assistant dean of the College. As assistant dean, he will serve as liaison with the IFC and individual fraternities, the IDC, and will also act as secretary of the ccsc.
Howard G. Hawkins III is also in Hanover, as an undergraduate, and was recently named by President Kemeny as a Senior Fellow. According to the Dartmouth College News Service, his project will be to "create a systems dynamics model of the economic transformation in Tikopia, a group of small islands in Pacific Polynesia. There, the traditional economy of the islands is being impinged upon by modern society and Mr. Hawkins will attempt to create his computer model of this sociological change using data from several studies already made in Tikopia."
Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, has a new instructor. Thomas P. Foley was appointed at that institution as instructor in theater and speech. After graduating, Tom did graduate study leading to a master's degree in history at the University College of Dublin, Ireland.
Jim Butzbach wrote recently that after completing a year at Emory Law School he has interrupted his legal studies to work on a novel. He supports himself by doing the bookkeeping, typing, and other work at a foundry. He lives in Oakland, Calif., one mile away from Mills College which he affectionately thinks of as "Colby Jr. West."
Bonnie Carey sent me a nice letter recently with news to share with the class. Bonnie, after working in Chicago until May, is back in California pursuing a master's degree in education at the University of San Francisco. She's teaching about "40 highschool terrors during the day and learning just what kind of thoughts race thru ninth graders' minds."
The really big news that Bonnie had to report is that she is going to add one more to the list of Dartmouth weddings. She and Mark Ransom '74 have announced their engagement and Bonnie writes, "Any '75s who'll be in San Francisco in July are welcome at the wedding!"
Matt Dwyer, still the class leader in most jobs since graduation, has decided to settle down! Matt has now started in a three and a half year architecture program at Penn. Mark Myers is also enrolled in that program, according to my spies.
Judy Geer had a great experience last summer when she rowed in the Olympics in Montreal. Judy is now teaching math and coaching crew at St. Paul's School in Concord.
Clark Cunningham sent us an interesting letter a short time ago. Last spring a friend of his was murdered in Detroit's inner city. As a result, Clark decided to pass up a Reynolds scholarship to Oxford and signed up for another year with Vista in Detroit. He is assisting low income urban tenants to improve their housing conditions.
Scott Herriott is in New Haven coordinating TM programs in the area. His recent statement at the Yale game is worth repeating. "I've found that if you watch where you step you can avoid what the Yale bulldogs are known for."
During the summer and fall, Al Barstow was doing archaeology work all over the Midwest., He is now working for Northwestern University as a field school supervisor. Al plans to go to graduate school next fall and will spend the winter in Aspen. That's too bad, Mr. Barstow!
Remember your dues and please drop me a line when you get a chance. Best wishes for a very merry Christmas and a happy 1977. See you next year. Isn't that clever?
