The President's Commission on White House Fellowships has announced the appointment of John Dickey as a member of the Boston Regional Panel. He will assist in selecting national finalists for 1976-77 White House fellowships in the New England area. John's new book, Canada and the American Presence, has just been published by New York University.
Bill Andres is keeping busy as the Chairman of the Board of Dartmouth Trustees, as his thoughtful message on the College's admission policy in the February Bulletin indicated.
A recent note from Jack Pillsbury (on a letterhead of the Headquarters of the Commander in Chief, Atlantic Fleet, Norfolk): "A big Bicentennial salute to Chan Bete, whose company in Greenfield, Mass., turned out this booklet. The Department of Defense has given it wide distribution, and deservedly so." The booklet, About the Declaration of Independence, is an attractive one in red, white, and blue, commenting (with cartoons) on many of the phrases and sentences of the Declaration.
Some more of your notes to Jack Hubbard: From Ted Arliss, Venice, Fla: "A happy Bicentennial Year to you and the illustrious men of '29. We just about balance out with '30 down here in Sarasota County, thereby illumining the scene. The ALUMNI MAGAZINE continues to be favorite enlightenment."
Earl Liberty: "In June of 1972 I reached mandatory retirement age from Clemson University, having spent 19 years in the area of business administration, specifically Purchasing Division. After a two-week trip to London I went to work for the city of Clemson as City Clerk and Treasurer and have just recently relinquished all official titles and duties but am staying on for a while on a reduced work schedule - enough to stay pleasantly busy."
And a breath of fresh air from out yonder - Ed Canby: "Nothing of great import or excitement to report. My wife and I built a house just outside Dubois, Wyo., last year, and we divide our time about half and half between there and here in Sedona, Ariz. Am still pursuing my efforts at painting, and these efforts can be carried on equally well at either location. Must admit that I am fortunate that our existence is not entirely dependent on the returns which result. And I am grateful that my life can be spent in two such beautiful, peaceful and pure-air locations, as the fantastic red rock country here in Sedona and the majestic mountain scenery surrounding our Wyoming home, which is now our legal residence. City life has lost whatever small appeal it ever had for me. As you can see, I am virtually removed from any contact with Dartmouth except for the Magazine and class notes. But I am cheered by the many wonderful memories I have of a four-year interval in my life, so many long years ago."
And last, news of a tragedy from John Irving: "I have the sad duty of informing you of the passing of my wife Emily on January 28. I am sure that her many friends in the Class will be saddened to learn of this. I will continue to live in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla." Jack, our sympathy and best wishes are with you.
