As another year of class news starts I seem to have a number of lists of classmates who have, are, or will be gathering for a variety of purposes. The lobster picnic in Maine attracted the largest crowd yet with 77 assorted classmates, wives, girlfriends, children, and friends. The enthusiasm was only slightly dampened by the 100+° heat. Tithe will carry a list of attendees.

In Hanover, Gil and Fran Balkam, Pete andBarbara Fitzherbert, Bill and Abby Niss, Dickand Dorothy Allen, and Boyce and ElizabethPrice attended Alumni College. As I write this we have a contingent in darkest Africa consisting of Bill and Anna Wyman and son Bill Jr., Dick and Katherine Wilson, Jack and PeggyGreenwood, and Fred Babcock and grandson Fred Cuda. Buzz Chapin was expecting to go but withdrew the day before departure due to illness. The Wymans return on September 3 while the rest go on to Johannesburg and Rio de Janeiro returning September 8.

Among a few bits and pieces from here and there; Fred Dailey, who attended the lobster party for the first time with wife Betty, practices law in the Boston area. Ross Martindale will be joining our growing list of retirees soon. Tomand Jean Parker, now living in Florida, spent the summer at Heritage Hill in Southbury, Conn., where they used to live and attended the Maine lobster feed. For those of you who are enthusiasts of Sherlock Holmes read an article "A Case of Identity" in the June edition of TheBaker Journal written by our own PaulZens. Ken Lieber is very busy as president of Cyprus Mines and board of directing for other companies. Lou DeBus lives in Santa Monica, Calif., where he is deputy probation officer for Los Angeles County.

You have all received the mailing last June with the first announcement of our 40th reunion with the return card included. As of August 26, 204 of the Class had replied with 54 definitely coming, 62 probably coming, and 42 possibly coming with a total of 308 people. 46 cannot make it for one reason or another. This first count is certainly good and it should encourage more of you to make your plans to join in. I think there will be another mailing before you get this but send in your card with yes if you haven't already done so! More details will be coming along shortly. Incidentally, think what a great affair we'd have if all 356 who contributed to the Alumni Fund this year would show up in Hanover next year. That would be 67.8% of the living members of the Class! The Class of 1935 set the record this year for the most to return for a 40th - 147 men and 281 people. If we live up to first indications we should beat that easily.

A good long letter from Chuck Lehman who is still married to Betty Parsons, Connecticut '36, and still practicing medicine, spending most of his time "catching and taking care of babies." Has delivered somewhere between eight and nine thousand and still likes it. Daughter Anne lives in Wellesley Hills, Mass., with her husband and three children. Judith is married to Ham Lokey '67, has one child, and lives in Denver where Ham is completing a residency in surgery after 2½ years as a Naval flight surgeon. Charles teaches school in Carthage, N.Y., and jointly owns and runs 25 hoagie shops in the area. Beth is married and lives in Cambridge, Mass. Chuck and Betty have property at Quechee where they hope to retire some day. They as well as some of the kids use it frequently. This makes me think it might be interesting to compile a list of vacation and retirement spots owned by classmates in the Hanover area; besides Chuck I believe Ray Builter, Frank Kappler, and Ed Brooks are at Quechee. Don Ballantyne lives at Eastman and John Bouker has property there also. Bob Fernald has a house in Hanover. I'll make up a list if you let me know any others. Chuck concluded with a quote from Paul Hessler when he (Chuck) was doing his thing as an assistant class agent, "Possibly as a sympton of advancing years I find an increasing warmth in my feelings toward Dartmouth. I seem to have gone through a period of disenchantment, and not to say cynicism, which extended to many things, and so I guess I'm coming out of the other end of the tunnel. I concluded I'd a hell of a sight rather support Dartmouth than a lot of the other things constantly clamoring for support."

A letter from Bill Spring via Ed Higbee is of particular interest right now in view of the situation in Portugal. Bill retired from the Travelers Insurance Co. in August, 1972. After a 12 months trial at farming, Bill and Marie packed up and stored their possessions then left for Portugal in October 1973. They spent five months in Lisbon and south living in small towns and small inns. They had 10 days in Madeira and a month on the desert island of Fuerte Ventura in the Canary Islands. Most of their travel was by freighter. The Portuguese revolution occurred on their second day out of Lisbon and Bill feels they were very lucky to have that experience and that Portugal will not recover from it's troubles. They spent last summer, and this one just finishing, in Connecticut with eight months in Lakeworth, Fla., in between. Bill has read all the pros and cons of the "restructuring" of Dartmouth and has concluded it was a mistake, and that what Dartmouth has done "will not help a blessed soul become a better person, a More intelligent citizen, or find greater salvation on this mortal coil."

Perhaps Bill will have second thoughts later as Paul apparently has but each one is entitled to his opinion and I'll try to cover them all. Would welcome other ideas, news, or suggestions.
