For anyone who thinks (who thinks?) as my mother does, that I have changed my name to George, I haven't. For those of you who don't care, I agree. The ALUMNI MAGAZINE and the printer were just being consistent with most people who insist on calling me Craig, Jerry or Herman. What a complex. That was your punishment for not corresponding.
I didn't desire to write this column to display my writing skills because, truthfully, I barely passed English 5. I thought this would be an opportunity for me to keep in touch with the other members of the Class and for everyone to do the same. I believe it will be.
I was motivated to begin this month's column early, while watching the highlights of the Sunday football game. Number 57 of the potentially Super Bowl bound (is it over?) Cincinnati Bengals intercepted a key pass. His name: Reggie Williams. I never knew Reggie personally, but from what I have seen, he is dedicated, talented, and knows how to pursue a goal. Reggie played before a Monday night TV audience and was also quoted in SportsIllustrated. All of us, interested in football or not, should be proud of a fellow mate. Thank you, Reggie.
Also continuing to play organized, professional sports is Kevin Downing. The former "Tuna" (who was also a linebacker at Dartmouth) is playing hockey in Austria. Kevin is in Europe with second-year man Charlie "Another Tuna" Solberg '75. The Austrians must think all Americans are related to Hoss Cartwright - another of Kevin's nicknames. Good luck, Kevin.
Steve Bell has been elected to a two-year term as a trustee-at-large to the Hill School of Pottstown, Pa. Steve is a reporter for the Stanford (Conn.) Advocate. In the xeroxed article sent to me on Steve there were listed many of the outstanding things he has accomplished, but due to his neglect of us, I refuse to divulge anything. Take that!
Somehow, a "letter" dated 9-22-76 has just been received yesterday. It is written on a piece of white lined paper extracted from a blue-book. Yes, those dirty, unfair, illegible blue-books. The author: Steve Schmanske. 'Schman commented on the graduate students he schools with at UCLA: "all the grad students are kinda weird. I fit right in." Also in California are DickCarroll, Rich Horan, Fishy (AN ARROW) and John "Wilbur" McConnell. The three Musketeers are living in Sausilito (fishy too). Dick reports that "we're all doing restaurant BleepBleep." By publication, 1 hope to have visited them.
In Florida working is Vicki Bohn (details unknown). In Florida studying at law school is Scott Specht. Tator, why can't you take time to write? Typical Tator.
Andy Shaw, writing from Cornell Law says, "Dartmouth is represented well in the first-year class, including '76ers: Andrew Walker, DaveLidstone, Kevin Gillis, Steve Feld, Greg Fryer,Dave Schmahman, Rick Matterson, and myself." He continues, "the law school curriculum doesn't set any time aside for luxuries as food, sleep, exercise, or the necessities." Andy is young; he'll get over it!
Class president Gordie Miles has been substitute teaching in his native Winnipeg. Gordi is teaching math, science, social studies, phys. ed., etc. Gordie, by publication, will have switched jobs. He is hoping for an assistant pastorate position. Rev. Miles? Tom Fleming also changed jobs recently. He was formerly working for an electronics firm, now teaching in Boston. Flem has some interesting stories on how high schoolers still try to achieve high grades. Flem is still a little quicker.
On the marriage scene, Mary Davis has added a name to her maiden one. She married Andy Johnson '75 on June 26 in Jacksonville, Fla. Mary writes, "Andy and I were both anxious to get into politics as soon as possible. Andy ran for the Florida House of Representatives, while I learned quite a bit about organizing and managing a campaign. Andy was a little too young and liberal for his district." Mary is now employed by Delta Airlines.
Some xeroxed news fresh off the press: DavidFisher is living in Israel. His address: Madrigot Yael 4, Kiryat Eljezer, Haifa, Israel. BruceWilkens has joined the Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp. in Menlo Park, N.J., where he will participate in the sales and marketing department training program. Tom Souza is currently enrolled in the M.A. teaching program at Brown. What's the color of. . .
Bill Healey, former hoop player, has been named the recipient of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, making him the 16th Dartmouth student to be honored with this award since 1965. Bill is currently working for an insurance company in New Jersey and will attend Stanford in the fall.
Recently seen was Jake, I mean Jud, Porter. Jud spent the fall coaching the frosh football team. Says Jud, "it was my first and last time coaching." If my memory serves as usual, those were Vince Lombardi's words when he won the 1966 Superbowl. Jud Lombardi? Sounds good.
Speaking of reefer, John "Reefer"Haffenreffer expects to be working for Peavey Grain Company in or near St. Louis. "Speedy"MacDonnell is hiding out in a country-rock band in Tuscon. Plenty of good music bars and pretty women out there. Speedy was last seen in downtown Tucson buying an inflatable Linda Ronstadt doll. Musical companionship. I'm sure you have heard that Joe Morgan has decided to play in Japan in 1977. Just thought I'd drop that in, Speedy.
Once again I hope that everyone has a chance to drop a postcard or whatever to let people know what is happening for you. If you have time to read this magazine, you have time to drop a line. Please!
