We’re moving right along, and the first stop is New Haven and the Yale Bowl. I expected to see a large contingent from the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut area, but maybe the threatening weather kept them away. The people we sat with included the Allisons, MiltWilliams, Dutch Schaefer, Bill Lowenthal and John Hill. Incidentally, when I received the tickets from the DCAC, I noted that they were in row 42 and I thought that that was very thoughtful ’42 in 42. When we started the ascent on Saturday I was a little nervous as we passed two Sherpa guides at row 30 and port- able oxygen tanks were available at the 35th row. In case anyone asks you how many rows there are in the Yale Bowl there are 42! By the way the Green team was magnificent. We missed the Harvard game (the team did too) so no report.
The Cornell weekend was a big one with lots of classmates on the scene. At 3:30 on Friday President Burns gavelled into order an executive committee made up of Enos, Dingwall, Farly, Allison, Kirk, Kreter, Bond, Wood, Fanelli, and Winship. Decisions were the order of the day and I’ll report on the major one. By unanimous vote of the executive committee we adopted a second member of the Class of 1942, to join Myron Tribus ’42A. This gentleman is Mr. Robert James Keeshan and he carries impressive Dartmouth credentials.
In the first place. Bob is a good friend of many members of the Class. The College con- ferred an honorary degree on him in 1975, his son Mike is ’73 and Tuck ’75, while his daughter Laurie is ’75. In the event that Robert James Keeshan is not exactly a household word in your home, just turn your television set to CBS at eight a.m. Monday through Friday anywhere in the United States and give a loud and clear “Good morning, Captain.” When the Captain responds you have just chatted with your new classmate. Welcome aboard, Bob.
It isn’t often that buildings are named after college presidents who are still in harness, but on October 22 Skidmore College dedicated its new $3.4 million academic hall in honor of its president, Dr. Joseph C. Palamountain Jr. An editorial in The Saratogian described the dedication of Palamountain Hall as “An honor befitting the man.” According to the editorial, it has been during his tenure as president that Skidmore has achieved its greatest successes / and that “Palamountain the man grew with Palamountain the president, lecturing, writing, lending his time and directorship talents to more than a score of civic and cultural enterprises.”
Huntly Allison submitted his final report as treasurer for the 35th reunion and would you believe that he (we) showed a modest profit for that extravaganza!
The Outing Club opened for cocktails and dinner for our Class and we enjoyed seeing the Blankleys, Capronis, Eldridges, Enchermans, Earrs, Healds, Keeshans, McLaughlins, Millers. 'Dutch Schaefer, Bob Searles, Sturzs, Guy Swenson, Weinbergs, plus the executive com- mitteehnembers mentioned earlier. Following a .delicious dinner arranged for by Allan Dingwall, if was decided that Allan has finally earned his Varsity D it’s the one that goes with maitre!
The above group gathered at the Winship’s for a picnic the following day and were joined by the Jack Tobins, the Dexter Richards, and ProcPage. The picnic turned into a surprise for Adand Kiki Winship when President Dick Burns got the group’s attention and thanked the Winship’s for providing a house and a yard for the past 17 fall reunions as he stated, “We’re thankful for the past 17 years and we anticipate being thankful for the next 17.” And with that the Class presented a color TV to Ad and Kiki a formal thank you.
The College was very well represented at the inauguration of Henry Jefferson Copeland as president of the College of Wooster on October 7, 1977 in Wooster, Ohio our distinguished representatives being John Kemeny and our own Dick Silver.
Two important dates to remember December 25 and October 13 and 14, 1978. The latter is next fall’s mini-reunion and it shouldn’t be too mini as that is the date for the Yale game here in Hanover.
In the meantime Merry Christmas.
