Jumping right into this month's news, I'm pleased to report the following: The Oakland (Calif.) Tribune has a picture and an article about Gardy Bridge — "Gardner F. Bridge has been named new headmaster of the private Head-Royce elementary and secondary schools in Oakland. Bridge, who came to the schools as interim headmaster in September, received a permanent appointment late last fall. A graduate of Dartmouth College, he previously headed the University School in Milwaukee. He also has served as an administrator at Dartmouth and Trinity College in Connecticut." Congratulations, Gardy, and enjoy a long hot summer with Vida Blue.
The Class was well represented at Dartmouth Night in New York, which was the kickoff for the Campaign for Dartmouth via a dinner at the Waldorf on February 23. There were some 1200 poeple there, but the focal point was of course the presence of Milt and Phyllis Williams, Leo and Joanna Caproni, Warren and Margaret Kreter, Bob and Jean Keeshan, Joe and C. Y. Wilder, Dick Baldwin, Allan Dingwall, and Ad Winship.
A dandy letter from Dick Higgins complimenting me on my scoop in the last issue where I advised you that Jim Ingersoll had been named general chairman of the Chicago Heart Association's 1975 heart fund drive. I of course meant 1978, so thanks, Dick, for the reminder and a pox on the rest of you for your neglect.
Dick went on to say that he recently spent a bit of time in Washington and had a chance to say hello to Jim and Joyce Idema. When the time came to turn off the hello, Dick discovered that Chicago had disappeared in a passing blizzard, so the Idema's offered bed and board which were quickly and gratefully accepted. The man who came to dinner strikes again!
To continue with young Idema, he is text editor for America Illustrated Magazine, published by our State Department for distribution in the Soviet Union. In February of 1977 his magazine sent him to Hanover, along with a photographer, to cover Winter Carnival — that's right — to cover Carnival! Dingwall,Farley and your correspondent had lunch with him and gave him a hard time regarding his assignment, and asked him when we might see his write-up. Jim said it would probably come out in about a year, and 10, Jim Farley (or low Jim Farley) received the February issue a couple of weeks ago. Six pages of the 20 were glorious color pictures of the College and Carnival scenes, plus all of the copy and captions were in Russian. One of the photos is included. For those with limited erudition, the caption reads, "Girl running on snowshoes."
Should you happen to be punting on the mighty Amu Darya this summer, you might pick up a copy and see what Jim is up to. Probably covering graduation.
