With the winter we have been having in the East and the Midwest it doesn't take much prodding to long for the warm weather and good outdoor life coming up at our 25th. Can you imagine, for example, the terrific clambake we will be having at Storrs Pond with swimming, tennis, Softball and other sports; or how about the DOC hike to Mt. Moosilauke on a warm Saturday morning; or the delightful stroll across campus Friday evening from our dorms on the Gold Coast to the new Thompson Arena for the alumni dinner; or how about the picnic we will be having at the Bema; or an early morning walk around the campus before attending one of the reunion seminars on Thursday or Friday? Do any of those appeal to you about now? Well, those are just a few samples of the things we will be doing come this June 16-19, and that is only about ninety days from the time you will be reading this, maybe even less.
One benefit of this cold weather and snow, however, at least for the New Englanders, is the fact that for once our skiing is the best in the country and we don't have to endure the disdainful remarks of the Westerners about our icy slopes. That may be of little interest to those of you who have suffered in the midlands, but better days are ahead. Have faith.
In our last two columns we have been listing some of our classmates coming to reunion from the faraway places and I've had a couple of comments made that we take the closer-ins for granted. Not so; at least, not intended. However, to set the record straight, and to give proper recognition, I am pleased to add more names of friends that we will all be seeing soon. For example, from New Jersey we have had favorable responses from Hank Sperka, BobJahrling, Jesse Morgan, Jack Adams, Dan VanDorn, Jim Donmoyer, and Don Horrigan, to name a few. From Maine we have news that Bernie Lewis (our clambake king), DickDalbeck, and Sumner Moulton will be traveling down to Hanover. And three late adds from a little farther away which deserve mention are Kent Calhoun from Minneapolis, George Sherman from Maryland, and Jon Walton from Michigan. Back to the East, this time from New York, we are happy to report we will be joined by Jim Weidman, Bob Cotsen (from Buffalo), George Pandaleon, Dek Davidson, DaveOestreicher, Ardie Epranian, and Jay Stahl, and that is only a sample.
Just in the last few days our reunion chairman, Jack Boyle, has advised me that our entire Swiss contingent will make the scene; that includes Al Jackson, Pete Taylor and Al Fiertz. Now if they can make it, we all can. Some others that can, and will, are Jack Hart, BobBrace, Bill Thomas, Art Judson, Ray Buck,Charlie Curtis, and John Barto. I also note some interesting combinations will be in attendance. For example, two good friends, Jim Toffey and Jack Unkles from New Jersey, will be in Hanover. Jim was recently featured in an IBM ad in the WSJ describing his activities as a senior vice president at First Boston. The two Logan boys, Frank and Norm, will join us, but it begins to look like our only class twins, Frankand Chuck Cory, won't be with us unless someone with more persuasive powers than I have can prevail. Work on it, somebody.
There is a pretty large contingent coming up 1-95 and 1-91 from Pennsylvania as we have affirmative replies from Ed Baldridge, ChuckQueenan, Jim Kreider, and Bill Davis, plus some mentioned above. And from the Connecituct-Massachusetts area some classmates you will be seeing are Lloyd Fisher, Roger Phillips, AlAcker, Ken Clarke, Al Sherburne, MendyBalkin, and Bill Thornton. We also note two other good friends, Jack Bethel and George"Sandy" Sadler, will be getting together.
Next month we will report on many more names we have not yet had a chance to tell you about. The list grows and it is certainly not too late to begin making plans. Just the other day I had a good phone visit with Al Reich and he told me the plans for the various team captains and club and fraternity presidents who will be contacting you to get as many people with common interests to join the group. Sam Wallis is sending each member of the Class a complete set of addresses . . . you probably have it by now. Why not get your own group together?
We do have a little other news. Frederick"Tad" Stahl, noted architect, and for many years president of his own firm, has joined forces with Perry Dean Partners, Inc. to form the new firm of Perry, Dean, Stahl and Rogers, Inc. in Boston. Tad is president of the new company. The list of accomplishments of these talented people is most impressive and the new firm is bound to be even more impressive.
Finally, Connecticut's loss is Ohio's gain as we are pleased to report that Roy Megargel has been appointed president of General Tire International Company and he will be head-quartered in Akron. In his new assignment Roy will be responsible for international sales and manufacturing operations of the company. It is the company's strategy to specialize in joint ventures overseas with partners from the local country. GTI operates as a minority stockholder and supplies the technical expertise. Sounds like a lot of negotiation which Roy should enjoy since he obtained his law degree from Harvard after graduating from Dartmouth.
It was also very nice to get a note from JackMykrantz recently. Jack and his wife Barbara live in St. Louis where Jack is with Monsanto Enviro-Chem Systems, Inc. He reports all is well and they will be joining us for reunion. Barbara, by the way, spent time in Hanover working in the botany department while we were in school so we can consider her an honorary member of the Class.
We'll see you next month and, hopefully, we'll see you all in June. Remember, we've only just begun!
