The College's first sorority is being organized this spring. Leslie Mandel, Penny Breed, and Thayer Wendell, all members of the Class of '79, invited a representative from Sigma Kappa, a national sorority with over 100 chapters, to meet with interested students, and to interview prospective members. "The purpose of a sorority at Dartmouth," Mandell said in an interview with The Dartmouth, "will be to get the girls together and not to be the socialites on campus. It will allow for comradeship, something I, as well as others, feel is lacking on this campus. Those of us who want a sorority are neither pro-women's lib nor anti-women's lib."

The reaction of the College has been noncommittal. Assistant Dean Greg Hakanen '75 was quoted as saying, "The College has neither taken a stand for or against the establishment of a sorority. Financially, the sorority is entirely independent as it would not receive any funds from the College." The reaction of the Inter-Fraternity Council, however, was more enthusiastic. Council President Robert Ceplicas '78 said, "A sorority at Dartmouth would be a great idea as it would create the potential for some exciting social events." At the time, fraternities had just concluded their formal rush, during which 34 fewer pledges "sank" than last year.
