FIFTH REUNION
Fifth reunion for '72 was a super weekend for which reunion chairman Bud Lynch and his staff should take considerable credit. Nearly 200 '72s, wives, and dates enjoyed three days of entertainment, conversation and, of course, plenty of beer.
Early arrivals began appearing at Butterfield and Russel Sage Halls on Thursday evening, and by Friday afternoon nearly everyone was under the class tent swapping stories, drinking, and reminiscing. The nearly three hours under the tent passed like fifteen minutes, and the Class proceeded to an outdoor supper beside the new Rupert Thompson Arena. Everyone was duly impressed by the modern, highly functional, and attractive sports facility.
A reception by President Kemeny at his home was followed by a Glee Club concert featuring the Aires and Woodswind. At the tent, carousing and drinking went on until early in the morning. A few nostalgic types made some latenight runs to the Tally House in White River Junction.
Throughout the weekend Bill French reconstructed his recent European tour with a slide show in Butterfield Hall. Bill stocked plenty of bourbon, wine, and ice for the audience.
Saturday morning began with a continentalstyle breakfast under the tent served late into the morning for the numerous late-sleepers. Several '72s groused that they had become "short hitters" with the passage of time. A class meeting at 28 Silsby followed, presided over by outgoing president Dan Cooperman. Reports were given by treasurer Dave Friend and secretary John Burke. Among topics discussed were fund raising and the role of the class newsletter. Nominations chairman Peter Heed conducted elections for the executive committee. After the meeting everyone made a beeline for an outing at Storrs Pond - some by car, others by bike, and a few stalwarts jogged the couple of miles down the Lyme Road.
The picnic was a combination of sun, beer, hamburgers, hot dogs, volleyball and, ultimately, rain. A happy-but-soggy group proceeded back to Hanover that evening for a reception and spaghetti dinner at the DOC House.
Speeches by Professor James M. Cox and former Dean Carroll W. Brewster highlighted the evening. Professor Cox, who gave the Class Day speech five years ago, thoroughly enjoyed his reassociation with the class. Peter Heed announced the results of the elections for the executive committee. At-large members are: ChrisCarstensen, John De Regt, Gary Dicovitsky,Dan Moors, Peter Thomson and Greg Yadley. Outgoing officers Dan Cooperman, Dave Friend and John Burke remain on the committee, joined by their newly elected replacements.
The final bash of the weekend was held that evening at Tri-Kap, where a band played well beyond midnight and cocktails and beer were poured endlessly. Woodswind, the female harmony group, also appeared. The executive committee met that night and elected Peter Heed as president. Bill Price as treasurer, and myself as secretary.
