Where the summer went, I don't know, but it surely did go fast. I had some great letters and will cover a few with you now and the rest next month.
From the Shore Line Times in Guilford, Conn., for July 13, comes an article about DonCrowther, vice president of Aetna Insurance Company, on the occasion of the annual Independence Day Children's Parade. Don's speech was most inspirational, and he reminded everyone to be proud and remember "that the great inheritance of liberty is still ours." How very true, Don, and how great you looked dressed up like Uncle Sam.
Leon Lindheim wrote that after 47 years with the Continental Bank in Cleveland, he retired in July from the position of vice chair. He is pursuing his hobby of numismatics (for you less smart guys, that is coin appraisals and coin consulting). Leon has been writing a syndicated column for United Features Syndicate since 1966, entitled, "Coin Wise." He wants you all to know that he would give any and all free numismatic advice. All he asks is that you enclose a self-addressed and stamped envelope and send it to him at P.O. Box 22221, Cleveland, Ohio 44122. He mentioned that he used to give advice to our late classmate, BobLindstrom, and also that he and Art Moebius often discuss coins. Thanks for the letter and for the kind offer, Leon.
A lovely letter came from Ethelyn Hedges thanking our class for the book donated in Dave's name. She wrote, "That would have pleased Dave very much, as he spent many an hour in that library and was very proud of it." Thank you, Ethelyn, for your thoughtful letter.
I'm sure you remember my articles about Bill Reid and his leadership during South Boston's school bus trials and tribulations. Well. Bill has just been elected to a one-year term on the board of directors of the Boy's Club of Boston, Inc. They are extremely fortunate to have Bill on their board. Congratulations to you, Bill!!!
A news release informs us that Karl Weber retired as vice president in charge of branch operations for Motors Insurance Company. Karl had been with the company for 38 years. Welcome to the Club, Karl!!
When Bill Wilson retired as executive director of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, a dinner was held in West Leb, and over 250 people attended, including doctors Walt Crandell and John Lyle and our favorite treasurer, EdBrown. Bill received many, many accolades from leaders in the hospital field. One tribute I thought you might like to read came from John Danielson, executive director of the Capital Area Health Consortium, Newington, Conn. He said, "Probably greater than any gift that Bill Wilson possesses is his talent for companionship - people like to be with him. He is an oasis in a world that is testing the nerves of both men and women. Just to be around him gives you the sense that there is a good life to be had even in troubled and complex times." Again Bill, my heartiest congratulations for a job well done. Now you have all the time you need to get the 45th in good shape for next June!!!
Dana Reddington and my brother John also sent me clips about Bill's retirement dinner. Thanks to you both.
Bernie Cushman retired from his law practice to enter full time as a neutral arbitrator in labor-management disputes. He is one of the regular arbitrators between the U.S. Postal Service and the postal unions, so you know he has had a busy summer. He also arbitrates in airlines, steel and railroads. Bernie says he's busier than before, but he's enjoying it.
Guess I'll have to save the rest for next time. Have a good October.
