Last September, I received a newspaper clipping from the Rutland Herald which was of great personal interest to me since it regarded Brain Hickey who was one of my freshman roommates. According to the article, Brian is the director of racing at the Vermont State Fair. This is the first time ever that parimutuel racing has been held at this fair. I guess this should not surprise me since I remember many road trips down to Rockingham Park with Brian. I just didn't realize at that time that he was preparing for his career. However, Brian had always been interested in racing, since I recall his family owns some fairly good race horses and had a box at Belmont Park. In addition, they were shareholders at the track at Hinsdale, N.H., where they had a summer home. Prior to this new position in Vermont, he had been involved in organizational and operational work at tracks in Michigan, Ohio, Maine, and Florida.
Just before the summer break in the publishing of the magazine, I received a letter from Mike Slive advising that he has given up his position as the Hanover District Court judge in favor of private practice. One of Mike's specialties is representing Dartmouth players who have aspirations to play professional football. Two years ago he represented Reggie Williams '76, the great middle linebacker who is now playing first-string linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals. Last year he represented Nick Lowery '78, the kicking specialist, and Greg Robinson '78 the defensive tackle. Lowery signed with the Patriots and Robinson was drafted by the Jets. Hopefully Dartmouth will continue to produce the teams and athletes for Mike to expand in this specialty.

Irwin Posener Kramer, who received his master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business after graduating from Dartmouth, recently married Barbaranne Smolin at the Fort Lee (N.J.) Jewish Center. Barbaranne is a research associate in the pulmonary division of Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center. Irwin is an investment counselor with Mosely Hallgarten & Estabrook in New York.
Dr. Peter L. Halvorson, associate professor of geography, has been appointed acting head of the Department of Geography at the University of Connecticut. After graduating from Dartmouth, Peter went on to receive both his master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Cincinnati. He also served as a geographer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, carried out extensive research in Appalachia, and taught at the University of Cincinnati, the University of Northern Colorado, and in 1970 came to UConn.
Much as we have enjoyed commenting on the political progress of Paul E. Tsongas, we have just received a cutting from the Transcript in North Adams, Mass., which features Mrs. Nikki Tsongas, Paul's wife, who seems to be assisting immeasurably as an advance promoter in her husband's campaigns. We followed this up with a call in September to his Boston headquarters, and have the good news to pass on that Paul won the senatorial nomination in the Democratic primary. Congratulations! He will be challenging incumbent U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, who was renominated in the Republican primary. The current polls indicate Tsongas and Brooke are running neck and neck.
We are most sorry to have to report the recent passing of another alumnus from our Class of '62. John William "Bill" Nichols, 39, died August 2, 1978 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Providence, R. I., after years of trying to combat cancer. He leaves a wife Nancy and daughter Cristen. Our sincere sympathy and condolences are extended to both of them and other members of his family. We will be mentioning more in next month's obituary column, after I have had a chance to try and reach Nancy so that we may respect her wishes in the preparation of the thoughts she would like to share in memory of Bill.
We do appreciate those of you who keep us supplied with letters and comments, but would certainly like to hear from more of you, as it is often the same faithful writers and resources who pull us through so we have sufficient material for this column. Please remember to keep us posted and send along some news that we can share with other alumni through the magazine.
