It's Fund time again. Strikes us the way time erodes logic, it goes year 'round. For guys like Fenn and Robin it does. Thank goodness we have such dedicated gentlemen willing to assume such responsibility with enthusiasm. If you can take a few minutes to consider writing your check early, it will save wear and tear on them as well as all those assistant agents. Reflecting on the "Campaign for 1937's Fortieth" that worked so well, how about similar thoughts for the current "Campaign for Dartmouth?"
The New York dinner February 23 for the above campaign was a sellout. Prexy Ray had hoped for better attendance, but the '37 table held Rays, Dorans, Camerers, Millers, and Fenn at the head table. Roily Bialla had to cancel out.
Searching the Boston area for tidbits. On February 1 the First National Bank of Boston collapsed with the retirement of CharleyPingree, followed within days by the great blizzard. We thought the great egg-maker in the sky was trying to tell us something, but Charley merely mentioned on the phone he had survived both quietly sitting at home in Duxbury contemplating his naval, fishing, and golf. Too early for plans. Crawf Ferguson was home on a quick business trip from Punta Gorda where he spends all his time filling little holes in the ground with white balls. Says he sees a lot of big Ed White '38 who retired there last year.
Hal Putnam has moved to 7 Stonehill Drive, 3-C, Stoneham, Mass. 02180, phone 617-438-0602. He has given up law practice to spend full time painting and chose Stoneham for its accessibility to country and shore as subject matter. He was elected president of the Copley Society of Boston, the oldest art association in the country. With the help of Gene Jones, who scouted out the feasibility while in England for him, Hal will be putting on his first art show abroad at the Heathrow Hotel Gallery (at the airport) June 5 to 26. Any travelers landing there look him up.
Speaking of art, in the Wall Street Journal March 3 Dick Rush was mentioned in an article concerning gifts of art versus the Internal Revenue Service, wherein the new IRS staff and their panel of so-called experts have been cutting down on the value of art gift deductions. He says they act with insufficient information and, not using fair market value, always compromise to get more money. Says Dick, "It's just not a democratic process."
We wondered why faithful Marge and AlbyChester missed reunion, and now we know. An avid fisherman, Alby was overwhelmed when his son '75 presented them with a three-week trip to England to fish the river Test (privately controlled with the fastest trout in the world, big as your arm), and also the Tamas river. This is the trip of a lifetime, a fisherman's dream. Typically the fish out-manoeuvred Alby, but his son got some. They golfed in Edinburgh with Fred Hatch '46 and had four days in London, where they picked up the trophy trout stuffed and mounted. We are happy to report his business has had a complete turn-around and he is his usual bubbly old self once again.
A few one-liners. Fred Asher says he heard Herb Butz was getting along okay. Herb was in a horrible auto accident during our reunion time wherein his wife and others were killed. Asher was recently in Juno Beach, Fla., and saw Kane Zelle, who is no longer practicing medicine but involved in real estate. Fred also tells us Park Johnston has removed some personal weight (hooray) but has not yet unloaded the Lake Bluff house which has delayed their move to the West Coast. Jean Breitinger attended a tennis meeting in Biloxi, so she and a few women went to visit New Orelans. She called Sey Ochnser to say hello, and he ended up joining them for dinner at Broussard's in the French quarter. She also went to Norfolk to help daughter Marcia get settled in new digs and contacted Whitey Fuller, unsuccessfully, as Whitey was due home from the hospital following a bout with kidney stones. Virge told her they had to change their phone number, so please note Whitey's number is now 464-4961. All else is fine there.
We had a nice note from Harry Cooke's widow, Kathy. She would like to see some news from or of Harry's roommates, Art Covey, HepRandolph, and Ben Eskeson. (So would we. Ed.)
We regret to report the death of Rev. RogBarney of a cerebral hemorrhage March 2. Details will be found in the obituary section.
