JUNE 1978 GEORGE E. COGSWELL

June and I had a great time at Class Officers Weekend. My brother and his wife had a cocktail party for his '31 group and included all the '34s who were in town, namely, Irja and Bill Wilson, Barbara and Ed Brown, Ellie and WaitCrandell, and Franny and John Lyle. Sure was a great time. On Friday, the banquet included the Browns and Wilsons and added arrivals, Millicent and Bill Emerson, Gerry and Bill Scherman, Jan and Art Leonard, and Bill Daniels.

More about our treasurer, Ed Brown. The Hanover Chamber of Commerce cited him as citizen of the year. A well-deserved pat on the back, Ed.

Bill Wilson, who has been executive director of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital for over 30 years, received at a recent meeting in Boston a gold medal for "outstanding service" to the New England Hospital Assembly, Inc. Congratulations, Bill!

Dr. Emerson Day has been appointed medical director of George and Anna Portes Cancer Prevention Center in Chicago. Em joined the Northwestern University faculty in 1976, after a brilliant career at Sloan-Kettering Institute in New York, and was director of the Strang Cancer Prevention Center in that city. He has received just about every honor and award in the field of cancer. We are very proud of your record, Em, and when June and I get back to Wilmette, we will get you and Ruth over for a gabfest. I'm ashamed that we haven't done so sooner. Thanks for your letter and the picture, and our congratulations on the appointment.

A fine letter from Len Harrison came from Clearbrook, N.J., where he and Jean live. The accompanying picture shows the two of them greeting Hazel and Morrie Levine at a hospitality tea for new residents at this adult community near Princeton. They now live just 2 blocks from each other. I do thank you for the letter, Len, and the picture.

Al Kahn sent me a clipping that was a bit startling but has a happy ending. I quote the article in its entirety: "Once controversial, always controversial, even in your wildest dreams. Albert Kahn, the outspoken Glen Allen author, is recovering at Sonoma Valley Hospital from a severe heart attack. Trust Albert to be flamboyant, even at death's door. He swears he 'crossed the river Styx' when he suffered a cardiac arrest, 'and there on the other side I saw shadowy, dim figures carrying placards. As I came closer I could see that they were signs that said, 'Kahn, go home.' So he turned back. The blighters may have saved his life."

Al says his famous book, Days withUlanova, a Pictorial Report of the Great Russian Ballerina, is to be republished this fall by Simon and Schuster in a quality paperback. The rave notices on the book make it an absolute must on your reading list. Thanks for the note, Al, and I'm so glad you are recovering. Good luck and good health!

Be sure you help Bill Emerson get our Class Alumni Fund donations in on time and in good quantity. He deserves the best of help after taking over for Al Jacobson.

Start planning now for June 11-14, 1979, for the big 45th reunion. It will be here before you know it!
