Do all those years of medical school pay off? You know they do, particularly when you hear of a classmate's exceptional medical performance.

Take Stuart Belkin, for example. Stu has for two years been captain of the "Jock Docs," a team of doctors, residents, and medical students from the Tufts School of Medicine who treat athletic injuries at Tufts. Stuart directed the recovery of Tufts linebacker Jim Ford after he was paralyzed from the neck down during the Tufts-Willows game last fall. Stuart's star patient, after surgery and 104 days in the hospital, has regained all adult functions.

For his exceptional accomplishment, Stuart was awarded the Tufts Service Citation. And we add our congratulations.

How about Hamilton Lokey? He has a place in the medical record books now, having performed a Caesarian section to deliver Miracle Stacy Sickles. The miracle was that the child developed inside the mother's abdominal cavity! Ham is credited with saving the lives of both the mother and the child (who was born three months prematurely in addition to the other complications!).

In other medical news, Ken McConnochie has been appointed to a position in the University of Rochester Pediatrics Department. Previously, Ken was assistant professor of maternal and child health at Dartmouth Medical School.

Also at the University of Rochester is DanDichter, pursuing a Ph.D. in history. Dan is in Italy this year on a Fulbright-Hays grant to study 19th-century Italian political history in government archives in Rome and Florence. We wish Dan a pleasant year in Italy!

News from the lawyers: Al Chidester has joined Eastern Gas and Fuel Associates as associate general counsel. Al was formerly with Ropes & Gray in Boston. His law degree came from B.U. Law School. And Gary De Foer is administrator of the Worcester Regional Law Enforcement Committee. Gary's degree came from Boston College Law School.

Sam Stonefield was reappointed to a second term on the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. Jim Rooks has moved to the Washington, D.C., office of Speiser Krause. The firm specializes in litigating mass disasters on behalf of plaintiffs. Jim was formerly editor of the ATLA Law Reporter. Jim, Corry, and daughters Margaret and Anne live in Bethesda.

On the intellectual scene, Julian Miller has written a new book called Breaking Through:Freeing Yourself from Fear, Helplessness, andDepression. Julian has also hosted workshops in Cambridge on "Energy, Centering, Courage, and Breaking Through." Those of you who feel guilty about your behavior in fraternities as undergraduates, or in life in general, might well invest in a copy of this book, which has been described as "a wonderful book of profound good sense" by the president of the International Institute of Stress.

A note from Chris Nevison, who is a math professor at Cornell, mentions that first son Chris is nearing his first birthday. Chris Sr. and wife Joyce enjoy the Cornell lifestyle. Chris placed 30th in the Dartmouth Marathon, and also ran at Boston. And an update from Carolyn Ellis, wife of television whiz kid Ken Ellis: She notes that she and Ken have been married for nine years. During that time, Ken has won several Emmies for his production of television documentaries for KGO-TV in San Francisco. Ken is now senior producer for documentaries at KGO.

From Menlo Park, Calif., comes news that Bob Sanner is assistant controller for the Areata Corporation. Bob was previously a senior accountant with Arthur Anderson. Bob's M.B.A. came from Stamford. Mike Hollnagel is with the corporate finance department of Prudential Insurance in Minneapolis.

Dick Paolino has become director of marketing for Bendix's automation and measurement division. The new job takes him from Rochester to Dayton, where he hopes the winters will be easier to take. He and his wife Beth have two sons.

Mac Perkins is a trust officer with the Connecticut Bank and Trust in Hartford. He's also a member of the sports and recreation committee of the Hartford Chamber of Commerce.

Your treasurer, Marine Major Jeff Zimmerman is living on the beach at Camp Lejeune these days. Jeff arid ,Pamm have the cash thoroughly under control.

Marion and I look forward to seeing all of you at the Brown game, either in the stands or across the street at half time.

That's all for now.
