By the time that this column arrives in your mailboxes, the football season will be well in the past. Considering the Big Green's performance to date, perhaps that is for the best. The most appropriate phrase to summarize the season seems to be, "Wait till next year!"
Eileen and I made the trek northward to Hanover this past weekend for the Cornell game. While the game was disappointing Dartmouth's offense had all the vigor of last week's keg - the weekend did provide the opportunity to see a few '74s. Don Blagden arrived from Maine, where he is still employed by the Department of Transportation. Doug Shufelt,Dave Von Loesecke, and Steve Severson were also present in the crowd. Also in Hanover was Class Newsletter Editor
Tom Guidi, managing to find time to get away from Boston and his work as a lawyer. Tom and I both want to hear from all of you! Also, without news this column will either get shorter or I will have to start writing fiction: TheFurther Adventures of Wilbur T. Gnorj? (see our yearbook). Seriously, letters, postcards, press clippings, even phone calls in the middle of the night will be gratefully accepted. (Although my wife would prefer letters to the abovementioned calls.)
The Cornell weekend was considerably enlivened by the presence of Mary and DaveHarkcom, who flew in from Moline, Ill., to spend the weekend in New Hampshire as our guests. David, formerly a VISTA volunteer, is setting up his own legal practice in the Quad-Cities area of Illinois-lowa. His most recent assignment was representing the defense in a murder case. He is also most enthusiastic about his recent induction into the Masons. Mary is employed by Better Homes and Gardens as a special projects consultant.
Recent news clips include an announcement from the Advertiser Democrat of Norway, Maine, telling of the July 29 marriage of RonBishop and Judy Coombs. Another clip from a certain well-known paper in Manchester, N.H., announced the marriage of Rick Bettes to Denise Paquette. Among the ushers were Peter Paquette '72, a brother of the bride, RichSpellman, and Paul Mesches. Denise, a graduate of Cazenovia College and Purdue University, is office manager at Northeast Plastic Machinery Corporation in Manchester. Rick is a senior accountant for Coopers and Lybrand in Boston.
A news release from the University of Chicago announced that Gary Craig received his Ph.D. in economics in August. Among the facts in the release was the following: "For the past five years, Mr. Craig has worked toward his doctorate in international economics under renowned economists including Jacob A. Frenkel, Milton Friedman, the late Harry Johnson, and Robert Lucas at the University of Chicago." Gary has accepted a position teaching international economics at Columbia University's Graduate School of Bsuiness.
Some slightly older news garnered from a copy of Tuck Today which came into my possession tells that, as of June, Mark Thomas had plans for a two-and-a-half-month tour of the world. Among the many points of interest was to be Hawaii, followed by a bike trip across Australia. Mark, send us an account of your travels and win this month's intrepid traveler award. The column also mentioned that Mark, along with Greg Kelley, competed in the 55kilometer American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race last winter. Mark crossed the finish line after eight and a half hours, while Greg's time was not mentioned.
More news next issue. Merry Christmas to all!
