Hot off the wires:
Back in November, Massachusetts newspapers were saying that the only state senate race that looked close would be between Stan Zarod and a fellow name of John Lovejoy. Well, it depends what you mean by close. Stan, a 20-year veteran of the Senate, clobbered Lovejoy 2 to 1. No wonder, when you look at Stan's bio: Springfield Elks, American Legion Post 277, St. Joseph's Society of Springfield, Lions Club, and Polish American Veterans Club; former Springfield City Councilor, delegate to the Democratic National Convention, and former acting mayor of Springfield.
If you want to talk telephones get right on the blower to Ab Davis in Madison. Conn. The Southern New England Telephone Co. moved him from vice president-marketing to vice president-residence, a new position brought about by the restructuring of the company. The newspaper story said that SNET's existing organization, built on functional concepts, will be replaced with a customer-oriented structure - business, residence, network, and number services. So there. (I can get you the name of Ab's hair stylist if you want).
Edgy about oil? Sprague & Son Company in Boston has named Whit Wells assistant sales manager, with responsibility for an acre or two of pleasant real estate, namely, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts. The Wellses built a new house in Hampton Falls and wife Very I says "We just love it by the sea." They're into sailing, have bought a 22'6" "Ensign" and are already crewing in races. Two grandchildren and a third due in May.
And if your crocheting is getting crotchety, Ham Bates is your man. Also in Connecticut - Chester, in fact - Ham replaces his older brother as president of the C. J. Bates & Son Company, one of the nation's foremost manufacturers of knitting needles, crochet hooks, and art needle-work accessories. The company was started by his grandfather in 1873 and Ham has been with it since 1945.
It was happy talking to Gil Gabriel down there in New York City (a suburb of White Plains, where he lives). He's still in advertising and writing ads and sales letters. And he's also writing something else. Would you believe crossword puzzles? Yup, he took a course in crossword puzzle construction and he's deep into it. Also plays squash four times a week at the Yale/Dartmouth Club, and goes to St. Croix for a week when wife Nan has a break in her nursery school teaching.
Wonder if he bumped into Buss and BarbaraBenner in the Croix? The Benners have owned a condominium there for fair eight years now, and slip away each winter for a couple of weeks of golf, tennis, and swimming.
Buss's old roomie, of three years standing, Stan Carter, does his winter condominiuming in a slightly different clime - Manchester, Vt., where he and Nancy go, from Albany, most weekends.
Another skier is the Arizona Bob Miller, who says he's gotten in one week in Taos, N.M., with Sun Valley coming up (if there's any snow in Sun Valley). Some four inches of slush fell on Tucson and it may not be seen again until 1984. Bob is also planning to follow in Jimmy Carter's waves and run the Salmon River next summer.
The Boston Globe ran a splendid profile in January on the not-so-easy-life of a hockey mother - in this case, Irene Hughes, wife of Hank Hughes, coach at Melrose High for 31 years. Irene recalled the thousands of hours given to hockey over the years, as all three of her sons were captains of the Melrose team and all went on to play in college: Eddy at Boston College, Dennis '79 at Dartmouth, and Brian at the University of Maine.
And a nice final line: "A quiet household now, and quiet enough for the boys to remember all the times they had breakfast with a champion."
Just in from the shores of Lake Erie is the word that Art Kiendl has been named the new headmaster of the Nichols School in Buffalo, effective in June. Art has been president of the Cranbrook Educational Community in Detroit since 1971, and prior to that he was headmaster at Mount Hermon School.
That nice Ginny White, wife of Bill, pens from Altamonte Springs, Fla. (just north of Orlando): "Bill is secretary-treasurer of the Florida Appaloosa Racing Association and is a member of the National Appaloosa Racing Committee. He breeds and races Appaloosas - and thoroughly enjoys it!" Hi-ho, William....
I think most of you know that Karl Sorg married Jan Sullivan on December 16. And George Cummings closed up the Mt. Washington hotel in November and settled into Beantown in the executive search business, specializing in his specialty - hotels and restaurants.
That's it. Blessings.
