A gift of $1 million from the Noble Foundation has put the Medical School about halfway toward its goal of $25 million through the Campaign for Dartmouth.
The grant will establish an endowed professorship in oncology, to further the study of tumors. The chair will be named in honor of the late James J. Carroll '48, the foundation's senior investment adviser, who died in 1975 from cancer.
The Carroll chair is one of two new endowed professorships at the Medical School. The trustees have established a chair in internal medicine to honor the late Eugene W. Leonard '21, "in recognition of the outstanding service to Dartmouth" of the Minnesota banker who was long a benefactor of medical research programs.
The Medical School has also been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, for the development of new emergency services for two New Hampshire counties to the south of Hanover. Previous federal grants have funded the development of similar life- support systems in the northern section of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center referral area.
A new equestrian facility for the College will be established in Etna Highlands, thanks to the generosity of retiring trustee William H. Morton '32 and Mrs. Morton. The 178-acre farm has been used by the Mortons, who have another residence on adjacent property, for raising Charolais cattle. The old house, formerly a tavern on the stagecoach route from Hanover to Boston, will provide a residence for the director of the facility. Construction of a new indoor riding ring and an outdoor ring and conversion of the cattle barns will be a gift of Mrs. Morton.
Last, but, by no means least in significance, is the $1O,OOO unrestricted cash award from the Academy for Educational Development, in recognition of the College's exceptional leadership in the world of education. Dartmouth was one of 12 institutions chosen from among more than 400 nominated. Provost Leonard Rieser '44 accepted the award, on behalf of President Kemeny, from former President Gerald R. Ford, honorary chairman of the Academy, at a dinner in New York.
