Is someone trying to put us down? Trunkie Brittan had to let Ruth do the driving in England last spring because he was over the age limit for rental car driving. That came in a note from Duke Barto, fresh back from fishing in Montana and reminding us of the Yale weekend reunion, October 31-November 2, too precious an occasion to miss.
The Denver Post and the Leadville, Colo., Democrat give a boost to history buff FrankSullivan of Springfield, Ill. Frank created the spirit and inspired the execution of the first annual Texas Jack Day on June 28 in Leadville. Texas Jack nearly equalled his friend Buffalo Bill as a legendary plainsman, and Frank won't let the memory die.
Another achiever, RUss Goudey, picked himself up from the depression of a divorce and is again a busy consultant in music and show business. A group of his ex-pupils in France have organized a 50-year reunion in his honor on the Cote d'Azur in October. He says, "I shall be spending the following two months satisfying a dozen kind invitations to visit through Italy, Switzerland, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, and England, bringing me home just in time for Christmas with my children." He adds, "Hope that my regrets and fond salutations will be conveyed to the class, along with my assurance that I shall not miss the next occasion, and an expression of undying affection."
Dick Burke is a frequent caller and correspondent because of his deep concern for what goes on at Dartmouth. He speaks for many who feel our MAGAZINE and the "Bulletin" limit the news to the extent of censoring it and feels the faculty and administration "hold their views over ours with patronizing arrogance." He quotes Bill Simon: "Business must cease the mindless subsidizing of colleges whose departments . . . are hostile to captialism and whose faculties will not hire scholars whose views are otherwise." Dick's comments are more printable than some I hear.
The fact that this is printed may answer some fears about censorship. And a faculty with Colin Campbell and Jeff Hart, for starters, is not exactly all socialist, though we wonder about the newcomers. And I'll bet by the time this is printed that Doctor Steel will be confirmed, once a bow has been made to some strong objectors. We know the administration have heard from a lot of unhappy alumni. If we don't howl, they must assume we're satisfied.
Dick talked Bud Case out of some of his modesty and into a fine letter. Casey put in strict retirement rules at Lamson & Sessions years ago and thereby cut himself out of the old action. He misses it. He's active in the Retired Seniors Volunteers Program, has a tree farm, and gets away to Sanibel Island, Fla., in the winter. We'll have to get him down to that fine Dartmouth Club of Southwest Florida in Naples.
That's about all as I'm busy trying to think up a new name for Indian Pudding, but here's this:
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, But when the danger really gets intense Is when folks drink too long at learning's spring And end with loads of knowledge and no sense!
