The recent holiday season was in a way a sorrowful one for 1908, as we lost three of our loyal widows during that period.

One was the widow of George Squier, who died in a nursing home in Vermont on November 21, 1979. The second death was of Gertrude, widow of Arthur C. Sides, which occurred on October 1, 1979, in Connecticut. She would have been 87 years old in February 1980. The last sad news came from Bob Martin, the nephew of Claire Thompson, widow of PhilThompson. She died in Garden City, Long Island, on December 21, 1979, and was 84 years old last July.

But there's always light behind the darkest cloud. A number of classmates and widows of classmates answered my Christmas cards and were most encouraging about their living conditions. Jane Schilling, widow of Fritz Schilling, wrote a most enthusiastic letter about her life in Martsdale, N.Y. She explained that she belongs to a club where she plays golf, tennis, and bowling (what, no water polo?) and has a good time generally. From the masculine side of the class a letter came from Guy Blodgett, 1 who lives in West Boylston, Mass. He spends much of his time traveling, but says he enjoys, his life. More power to you, Guy.

From the College came word that PorterLowe and Arthur (Ted) Barnes have been given special citations for having each made gifts to the Alumni Fund for 60 consecutive years - a record much to be commended. And speaking of the Alumni Fund, 1908's record for last year showed a total of gifts to the fund of $10,157.22. This amount includes, of course, interest on bequests made by various deceased classmates but is still a credit to the class. Let's hope we do even better in 1980.
