I hope that everybody has read the article in the March issue of Yankee magazine entitled "All the Things We Do He Does Better." The "he" is John Kemeny, and the article is an inspirational, heart-warming story of our president. It starts with his return to the campus after six months of dealing with the frustrations of the bureaucracies in Washington in his role chairing the presidential commission studying the nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. His evenhandedness and extraordinary ability to reduce extremely complex topics into terms that the average layperson can understand remind me of a prior era when someone was trying to reach President Lowell of Harvard and was told that the president was in Washington advising Mr. Taft! Mr. Carter should take note, especially in this election year. (These notes are being written just after the New Hampshire primary and just before the Massachusetts primary. Who knows what the state of the electorate will be by the time you read this? How is Miss Piggy doing?)
Back in February, Pat and I were in the Hanover area during the long weekend, looking around for property to purchase for our retirement years. We didn't find anything that seemed quite right, but we thought we would establish contact with people and continue to be on the lookout. We couldn't possibly match the gracious old home of Vic and Vesta Smith, but there might be other alternatives quite suitable. Maybe those of us who are inclined to retire in the vicinity of Dartmouth might consider a tract of land that we could all settle on so that future mini-reunions in our doddering years could be held without our having to do any traveling. One way to find out is to attend our 35th reunion! It's not too late if you haven't signed up by now! (In fact the pitch from SteveHull, who's chairing the reunion committee, and Bob Paulson, reunion treasurer, should have reached you by now. If not, watch the mails like a hawk (especially if your name is Tommy) or write to Steve Hull, P.O. Box 1945, Westborough, Mass. 01581.)
While we were in Hanover, we celebrated our 28th anniversary with dinner at a delightful new restaurant called Carpenter Street, across from the Norwich Inn, and a Glee Club concert at Spaulding Auditorium. No Dartmouth songs were sung, but I enjoyed watching the animated direction of the new director, Melinda O'Neal. We also had very enjoyable visits with George and Betsy Barr and Cliff and Betty Jordan. The latter were in Florida and Puerto Rico in early March, and Cliff spoke to various alumni clubs.
I'm serious about our 35th reunion on June 9, 10, and 11. WATCH THE MAILS if you haven't received the word from Steve Hull or Bob Paulson or contact me if all else fails!
