I occasionally hear a classmate complaining that the Dartmouth spirit and its good old traditions have gone by the boards with the new generation on campus. Yes, I suspect a feuthings have changed, but this year's WinterCarnival was pretty good testimony to the fact that things really haven't changed that muchand may even be stronger. Faced with thereality of zero snow, it looked as if Carnivalwould be canceled, or at best that the famed icesculpture and skiing events could not be held inor near Hanover. However, thanks to the incredible ingenuity and spirit of the undergraduate body, they pulled it off with all thebells and whistles. They got the loan of a firetruck, snow-making machines, and free fuel oiland, with a horrendous effort, completed theusual center-of-campus sculpture, packed theentire ski jump, and made a five-kilometercross-country ski trail. They did such a goodjob that Middlebury and other schools askedfor and were granted use of the facilities fortheir carnival skiing activities. Yes, Virginia, the spirit of Dartmouth is alive and well on theHanover Plain.

Speaking of spirit, I am certain many of you have noticed that Ma Bell has recently become very aggressive in marketing such mundane products as telephones. Mickey Mouse telephones, no less, are a hot item. What you probably don't know is that one of our classmates, Kenneth J. Whalen, is largely responsible for the new marketing facelift. Up until two years ago Ken was president of Michigan Bell, one of .the system's larger subsidiaries. Then AT&T brought him to headquarters as executive vice president and put him in charge of marketing to residential customers. Since then he has instituted a real change at AT&T, which up until that time had been anything but a marketing-oriented company. Sounds like an enormous challenge for a company long nurtured in a hothouse as a government-regulated monopoly.

Received word that Ralph Dennis represented the College at the inauguration of Jerry Anderson, the new president of Ball State University. Ralph practices corporate law and is particularly active in local affairs in Muncie, Ind.

Rog Foster recently sent me a picture of three '42s George Swick, Dave Stephenson, and himself who were among 32 Dartmouth alumni on a cruise of the Royal Viking Sky between Copenhagen and Leningrad last fall. Unfortunately the picture couldn't be reproduced here because it was in color, but the three looked like they were having a great time.

I received a nice note from way out Minnesota way from John and Edie McClintock. They reported the arrival of their first grandson to accompany a granddaughter now over four years old. Also, their son Lon '77 has completed his tour with VJSTA and is now at Vermont Law School. Daughter Corey is studying business at Babson and son Todd is living with the Peace Corps in the Solomon Islands. John visited Todd out there last November and reported that Todd liked it so well that he just might stay out there. Interesting spot but a long way from home. They ended their letter with the comment, "See you in Hanover in June that's the carrot in front of us right now!"

We hope we will see many of you on June 9-12 in Hanover, along with John and Edie. Harvey and Dottie White are certainly working hard to make it a memorable occasion. The latest news is that we will be teaming up with the classes of '44 and '45 for a big band dance with the full-fledged sound of Glenn Miller.

Dave Weld also reports that his special reunion giving committee is off to a good start. As usual he has set a tough goal, but he points out that it is a most important cause, worthy of anyone's fullest support.

Remember, '46 up for June.
