I have some interesting news this month. Further details have come in on Bob Rudney's marriage to Joelle Durbin. The wedding took place in the cathedral in Grasse, France, Joelle's home town, on February 2. Joelle is currently earning her doctorate in English letters at the University of Paris. Bob, for his part, was a Reynolds Fellow at Oxford after graduating from Dartmouth and recently received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Michigan. He is currently in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force in Washington, D.C., and serves as co-editor of The Friday Review of Defense Literature. Bob and Joelle plan to live in both the Washington area and Paris.
Tom Reddy has been named a vice president of Fidelity Savings and Loan Association and will also serve as the organization's house counsel. Tom's office is in Oakland, Calif. Fidelity is a San Francisco-based corporation with 81 offices in California. Prior to joining Fidelity Savings, Tom practiced law, specializing in real property, small business, estate planning, and civil litigation. He then worked as a research attorney for the University of California at Berkeley, where he obtained his J.D. Tom's wife Linda is a teacher. The couple lives in Oakland.
I have word that John Mellquist, one of the talented musicians in our class, gave a harpsichord concert at Hopkins Center sponsored by the Department of Music on February 3. He has studied the harpsichord for 18 years. John's program was scheduled to include works by Morley, Byrd, and J. S. Bach.
I have received a copy of a stirring article published in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on January 7, about our classmate Ross Cirincione. As those of you who recall Ross probably know, he has been legally blind since birth and has only about ten per cent vision. After graduating summa cum laude with a distinction in mathematics from Dartmouth, he attended Harvard under a National Science Foundation award and received a master's degree in applied math. One of his latest accomplishments has been the receipt of a doctoral degree, also in applied mathematics, from the University of California at Berkeley. A paper prepared by Ross and a professor at the University of California is soon to be published.
The article reveals Ross as an extremely articulate person who has been a success in spite of all of those who sought to discourage him. He well understands what it takes for a person to survive in this world. As he so succinctly put
it, "The key to success is not good vision, but determination." It is his wish that others gain something from the relating of his experience so that they won't be discouraged by those reminding them of the difficulties they will face.
What Ross would now like to do, with his doctorate behind him, is work as a private research consultant for engineering firms. What he has been trained to do is to look at physical situations and put them into : mathematical terms. In these situations, the advice of an expert mathematician is called for, and Ross appears to be just the person to do the job.
And finally, I have some nice news about a group of our predecessors who may have been well-known to a number of '7os and who have made quite a success in the broadcasting business. Upon graduating, Scott McQueen '68, Ted Nixon '6B, Fred Hill '65, and Randy Odeneal '68 decided to go into business together and formed Sconix Corporation. They began work for a small radio station in Randolph, Vt. Two years later .they owned it and were able to acquire a radio station and a television station in Rhode Island and New Hampshire, which they later sold. Subsequently, they acquired an AM/FM station in Springfield, Vt., and one in Laconia, N.H. Recently, WCMF-FM in Rochester, N.Y., was sold to Sconix Group Broadcasting Inc. for $1.3 million. The group has also bought stations in Charleston, S.C., for $2.6 million and owns AM and FM stations in West Yarmouth, Mass., and Oneonta, N.Y. Reportedly, the group's West Yarmouth station has come to be a dominant force in broadcasting on Cape Cod.
I am out of news again, so how about a little help from all of you friends out there?
