Take out your 1981 date book and reserve October 24-25, 1981, for a '58 mini-reunion in Hanover. Its going to be Dartmouth Night on October 23 and that Saturday Bob Blackman brings Cornell's Big Red to play football in Hanover. A class dinner and other activities will be scheduled.
Incidentally, our class had the third-largest alumni group at the Dartmouth dinner in Williamsburg for the Dartmouth-William and Mary Weekend. Class President Joel Portugal and all who assisted him did a fine job.
•Peter A. Heegaard has been elected a director of Van Dusen Air, Inc., a Minneapolis distributor of parts and equipment to the aviation industry. Peter's recent promotion by Northwestern National Bank of Minneapolis was announced in this column a few months ago.
Dave Bradley and Chuck Neff have been added to the class executive committee. Chuck is living and working in Richmond, Va., where he is a partner in the accounting firm of Ernst & Winney. He and Mary lived for 22 years in Cleveland, Ohio, and are still well represented in Ohio with a daughter and a son attending Denison University and a son at Ohio Weslyan. Their youngest son is a high school sophomore. Chuck is serving as vice president of the Richmond Alumni Club.
Most of you are aware that Dave Bradley lost his bid for the Republican senatorial nomination in New Hampshire. You may not know that he carried his home area substantially and made an excellent showing throughout the state. The cost of developing name recognition is enormous, even in a relatively less populous state like New Hampshire. Public service needs the qualities of integrity, diligence, and fairness that Dave embodies, so we trust this setback will only be temporary.
One candidate who overcame the Republican landslide was Democratic Congressman Allen Ertel who was elected in an historically Republican district in Pennsylvania. Congratulations, Al. Now let's balance that budget.
Walt Vail is looking for more class agents. If you will help out, write to him at M L Huntoon Paige, Inc., 44 Wall Street, New York, N.Y. 10005. Being an agent is fun because it gives you a chance to visit with area classmates who otherwise don't cross your path. In addition to Walt's primary activity as our class head agent, he also serves as president of M L Huntoon Paige, Inc., a subsidiary of Merril, Lynch. He and Scotty have a daughter in the sophomore class at Dartmouth and another daughter who will be attending college next year. The Vails won the use of Bob Lindig's Hawaiian condominium at the 20th reunion drawing. They stayed there in late October and "had lots of fun and great weather." After the marvelous job Walter did as reunion chairman, he deserved good weather and much more. How about doing your part and signing on as a class agent?
One of the best letters to cross my desk in years came from Ted Harris, our prize-winning researcher, who looks about 30 and who claims his "brain cells are deteriorating" because he forgot to attend the class executive committee meeting. Heck, Ted, we've got classmates who have forgotten to attend a Dartmouth function for 2Q years! Ted and Mary Ann have one son playing soccer for the Yale varsity and another who helped Hanover win the New Hampshire State Soccer Championship this fall. Ted reports on his visit to Dave Bradley's for beer after the Dartmouth-Yale soccer game, where he talked to Ann Bradley, who is president of the New Hampshire School Board Association, overheard Frank Blatz and John Otis plotting how to beat John Graf at tennis, and urged BillYahr and Pete Williamson to apply for the opening as dean of the Dartmouth Medical School (both declined). Ted also relates that his son Chandler is playing soccer with PeterSpiegel's son Eric. Dr. Spiegel lives in Lyme, N.H. Ted saw Ward Burian in London where he is "thriving as a bond broker in his own firm, Lombard, Wall." He also saw Dodd Wilson who is "in charge of gastroenterology at the University of Minnesota Medical School."
Andy Thomas is now assistant vice president, field service, for Timeplex, Inc., a Rochelle Park, N.J., data communications company. Andy and family have been living in Needham, Mass., where he was director of sales and contracts with Honeywell Information Systems. Andy holds an M.B.A. from Babson College and has previously worked for United Technology, Ensign Bickford Company, and Atlas Chemical Industries. As we move from an industrial society to becoming an information society, we see more reports of classmates moving up in information-related fields.
I received an interesting letter from the class secretaries' representative to the Alumni Council, Richard Blum '53. He reports that the timetable for a decision on a new president for the College is from six months to a year. I hope they will select a Dartmouth graduate who will combine a distinguished intellectual and professional record with a love of those qualities which are unique to Dartmouth. Blum also reported that fraternity interest and membership is about 60 per cent, back to earlier levels, with three house corporations reorganized, major capitol imporvements being made on the houses, finances improving, and behaviorial problems down drastically. Our own Dean Ralph Manuel has worked hard and long to help the fraternities become constructive members of the College community. For the class of 1984, 7,700 applied and 1,097 were accepted, with applications down seven per cent. Dartmouth legacy applications were down 5 per cent. Approximately 15 to 17 per cent of each class is made up of sons and daughters of alumni, with acceptance about 55 per cent. Tuck School is going to gradually expand its enrollment from 136 to 160. The 145 current places were sought by 1,834 applicants. Women comprise 26 per cent of the Tuck class, and Dartmouth undergraduates between 10 and 15 per cent.
Have a healthy, prosperous New Year. And please write.
