As you approach Hanover for reunion, remember Will Rogers's bon mot, "Things ain't what they used to be and probably never was." Since the only constant in life is that everything changes, enjoy the moment, dream of the future, and compare nothing with the past. You'll have more fun.
In a graceful speech given at his installation at Culver, Ralph Manuel said he was influenced to accept the appointment in part by Eleazar Wheelock's epitaph: "Traveler/Go, if you can and deserve/The sublime reward of such merit." Such is the stuff of nocturnal graveyard sojourns. Anyone wishing a free copy of the excellent talk can get one from me on request in exchange for some mere morsel of news.
Richard L. Shanaman, executive vice president and treasurer of American Stores Company, has been elected a director of Federal Savings and Loan Association of Salt Lake City, Utah.
U.S. News and World. Report of January 24 quotes the graphic design, marketing, and communications firm of Anspach, Grossman and Portugal Inc. on the 1982 changes in corporate names, a subject they monitor. The Portugal is, of course, our own Joel Portugal.
Recently I was in contact with Bob Meyerson, who was with us during freshman year. The Meyerson family will be at reunion. Bob is chairman and chief executive officer of an Akron, Ohio, firm, Telxon Corporation. His company does business throughout the United States. Bob's wife Nancy is a graduate of the University of Arizona. The Meyerson family includes three sons and a daughter, all now in college. Bob is working on Jim Geier to come to reunion from Sun Valley, Idaho.
One world traveler admits missing '58s. Larry Lyons lives in Germany and travels extensively. He tried to contact Don Viny when he was in Athens in 1981 to run in a marathon. He also tried to contact George Haines when he was in Helsinki to run in a marathon in 1982. He left, after sending this note, to climb Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro "where there probably are no '58s to miss contacting."
A thoughtful "Dartmouth widow" (husband class of '27 and sons '60 and '64), Marian F. Ingham of North Brunswick, N.J., sent in a long newspaper article on Ted Harris. His job titles at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Rutgers Medical School and Middlesex General University Hospital are: professor and chairman of the Department of Medicine, chief of the hospital's medical service, and head of a residency program for over 100 medical school graduates. Ted hopes to increase research productivity. With over 70 articles, books, chapters, and scientific monographs to his credit, Ted sets a fast-paced example. Thanks, Mrs. Ingham, who also remembers when "Pete" Blatz married the girl next door.
If it hasn't washed away, Ben McAdams, his wife, and their five kids are living in San Luis Obispo, Calif. They have four in college and one in prep school. Ben practices orthopedic surgery. His community service includes school board, grand jury, and health agency work. He has done some evaluations for Dartmouth and "would do more." Ben has seen Phil Drescher in Ventura, Calif., and Don Shagrin. He keeps in touch with Joe Palermo and his new business in Massachusetts. The McAdamses will be in Hanover for reunion.
Congratulations to Professor Stephen Nichols, who has been chosen a visiting scholar by Phi Beta Kappa for 1983-84. Dartmouth is honored by this appointment, as Steve is on the faculty at the College. The qualifications for visiting scholars are published in the Phi Beta Kappa newsletter and are most impressive. Steve joins a select and distinguished company.
Our class nominating committee consists of Ron Snow, Dave Bradley, and Jim Brackett. Ron asks that anyone interested in serving on the class executive committee or in one of the class offices, including president, secretary, treasurer, bequest and estate planning chairman, or Alumni Council member, should contact one of them. The commitment is usually for five years and details are available on request.
Start packing your new pastels now for reunion!
