The one place on campus that simply reeks of Ivy Leaguishriess and education is Sanborn House Library ― ancestral home of the English major, hideaway of the couch-napper, purveyor of fine teas and comestibles, convenience stop for readers too encumbered by tweeds and beards to walk over to Baker. Over this peaceable kingdom reigns Charlotte ― everybody calls her Kiki ― McCanna, the best "assistant-in-charge" of a library we know. Kiki greets every habitue of her library by name, runs down books for the English Department, helps solicit new title recommendations, manages the library, and buys cookies for teatime. According to one admirer, Kiki does things that "no responsible librarian would be expected to do ― with good humor. She's the lubricant that makes the place work."
