In reading the obituary section of this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, we hope that you are not too disturbed by the unprecedented number of decedents recorded for 1911. In most cases, these represented non-graduates who, in large part, have remained unresponsive over the years and in the absence of specific data have been classified as "presumed dead." With two exceptions (Walter Gibson and HartfordLeonard) none of the former classmates listed had been included in the published roster of surviving members within recent memory. In addition, we were recently informed of the deaths of Sam Pickering on June 14 and Clarence Holden on May 27. See the September issue for Sam's obituary and an upcoming one for Clarence's. This reduces the number of surviving members to seven.

Despite the passage of time and the mounting years, Don Cheney continues to receive acclaim from a variety of sources. On September 12, 1981, he was presented a "Certificate of Commendation" by the American Association for State and Local History for "a lifetime of community service promoting the cause of local and state history."

Your secretary, in an effort to maintain his continued existence, is very dependent upon his trusty motor vehicle to transport him in the performance of his daily routine. Recently, h'e obtained a renewal of his driver's licence to July 1986. The requisite tests for renewal were accomplished without benefit of glasses. It is fer- vently hoped that neither he nor his 1973 model herdic "runs out of gas" in the foreseeable future.
