In September 1907, the Class of 1911 came into existence with an impressive enrollment of 395 members. Now, after 71 years, the roster of survivors stands at 20. John Coggins passed away on June 27 and William H. (Cap) WestonJr. on August 3. See the obituary sections of the fall issues.
Although Don Cheney has been the recipient of countless awards and citations over the years, this distinguished citizen of Orlando and Orange County, Fla., was further honored by being named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. This came about through a generous contribution to the foundation by Orlando Rotary in Don's honor. Presentation of the award took place at a June meeting of Orlando Rotary where the audience responded "with a standing ovation for this remarkable man."
In his role chairing 191 l's bequest program, Don reports recent gifts to the College by two 1911 widows, under life income trusts, in memory of their late husbands. Mrs. DorothySteeves Beecher has donated $50,000 to establish "The John F. Steeves Jr. Memorial Fund" which will become a scholarship endowment after the donor's death. Mrs. William H.Pearse has donated $5,000 to establish the "William H. 1911 and Beatrice E. Pearse Fund" on the Tucker Foundation for the aid of Dartmouth students after the donor's death. It should be noted that Mrs. Pearse shows a change of address to 800 E, The Common Way, Fishkill, New York 12524.
Harold Burtt writes, "Some of the survivors who read your column might be interested to know that I am basking in the reflected glory of my grandson, Ben Burtt Jr., who recently received an Academy Award (Oscar) for creating sound effects for Star Wars.
My customary weekly visit with Charlie Jordan took on added meaning when it fell on August 19, which was his 90th birthday. No special celebration was planned. Just a few old friends, a few toasts, and delicious delicacies provided by his super housekeeper. At 90 years of age Charlie has physical problems but retains, his keen mental alertness.
