A good portion of this month's news comes through much-appreciated input from those who have not only paid dues, but also included a brief comments on their own status; many thanks.
But to catch up on a few older items first, we were certainly pleased last summer to have Dick Butterfield drop in on us. He was just back from his 12th trip to Venice to work on his book of photographs of the architecture along both sides of the Grand Canal. As we understand it, the text and related pictures will describe the different types of architecture against the background of the century in which it was created. He was particularly pleased to have located a very old book on the same general subject which used sketches.
Jim Clark writes to Milt Mclnnes: "It has been a busy year California with son-in-law, sales manager for Remo Drum Head Inc., then to convention Frankfurt, Germany; Paris next (my French helped him with his dealers there), saw Moulin Rouge; next to London, more dealers, saw Evita; hence to New York, took in Dream Girls and The Great P. T. Barnum. "Jim also spent two and a half months helping his daughter move into a new home in Agoura, Calif., and son Tom '64 move to Farmington, Conn. Jim is incoming president of the condo association in Sun City Center and of the board of directors of Trinity Lakes.
Dick Blum, secretary of 1953, has sent along to all secretaries a report of the June Alumni Council meeting. There is a study afoot which relates to the grouping of dormitories in clusters and establishing exclusively freshman dormitories. He also reports that the restructuring of the Alumni Council "involves much more class representation by election and fewer atlarge memberships by appointment; at reunion time 12 new class representatives were elected."
Following is a collection of personal reports. Bill Reinhart "I'm still practicing law at 40 Wall Street, and fortunately we are feeling fine considering the passage of the years." Fran Horn "In Hanover last week to attend the funeral of Charlotte Ford Morrison, who was head of the Alumni Records Office for 40 years. Went to see John Dickey, in Dick's House as the result of a serious stroke. He would appreciate cards from our class, I'm sure. Also called on Professor Ben Pressey, who taught me freshman English. He is now bedridden but in good spirits." Dick Squire "Finally retired, so just rusting away! Each morning say a prayer for those still working. Take two hours to read the newspapers, time for a noon cocktail, and then a nap!" Pete Callaway "Just returned from Helena, Mont., where it was snowing September 14. Had my 75th birthday, dinner with my youngest sister and other members of the family." Snub Poehler 'Just trying to pay our bills with a little left over to go to Mt. Dora, Fla., each winter. Bob Chittim "The only classmate I've seen all summer is Hal Booma, who had a bout with facial shingles which seriously affected the sight of his left eye; but fortunately his sight is returning slowly, but his golf game was loused up." Marge and Bob returned to Longboat Key the end of September after four months on the Cape.
Ed Carroll "All is well! What more can one say. Still sailing, enjoying, and working once in a while and not very hard." Scott Van Derbeck "Doris and I have just returned from a great trip to Nova Scotia, including Cape Breton. Had a wonderful time and good weather. Also spent some time with my Yalie brother and old friends in New Jersey, then visited a Dartmouth widow (not '30) in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with whom we had spent vacations in Vermont a number of years ago." Don Might "Early July Harriet and I had ten days in Iceland salmon fishing. Rather stark but beautiful scenery to enjoy while en route to our camp and also while fishing the alluring pools. As we were about to leave camp Sandy McCulloch '50 arrived with the next group, so we had a last-minute update on the Campaign for Dartmouth!" Henry Hillson "I find myself busier than ever in my second year as chairman of Common Cause of Connecticut. Working to make government, national and state, more accountable to its citizens is terribly frustrating and never-ending, but each little victory makes it all worthwhile."
And now let us conclude by repeating the plea your secretary made at Woodstock. We are attempting to add a little warmth to the obituaries of classmates, as the final tribute to the man by his College and his classmates. But this requires assistance from fellows who were his buddies in the years gone by. So, if you see a name in the monthly listing in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE, or in the "Thirtyteer," which brings back memories, please, please contact me to see what we can work out. His family will appreciate it.
May your holiday season be a happy one!
