Michael V. Snyder '85 of Houston, Tex., has been named the first recipient of a Kennethand Harle Montgomery Scholarship, established last fall as a contribution to student aid at the College and aimed particularly at assisting undergraduates from Texas. Snyder was salutatorian for his class in high school and won prizes there in science, history, and English composition.
A Chinese historian and the president of the National Academy of Sciences are in residence at the College during this winter term as Montgomery Fellows. Arnold Jiang, founder of the Americans for the History of International Relations in China, and Frank Press, who served as science advisor to President Carter, will conduct seminars and be available to students and faculty.
The Xmas card sent out by Tom and Betty Carpenter of Scarsdale, N. Y., was a picture of their family of 20, including nine grandchilden and three great-grandchildren.
Betty Smith Sparks is now Mrs. Coleman, having married Reverend Lloyd Coleman, a retired Methodist minister, last summer. They spend part of the time at their home base in Rockford, Ill., some months in Betty's Whitefish, Wise., cottage, and three winter months in Delray Beach, Fla.
Mollie Bates writes from Concord, Mass., that she is correspondent for her Vassar class and is working to get a good turnout at reunion in June. Son Ben, with Amoco in Denver, came east last summer for his tenth reunion at Dartmouth.
Nanette Elmquist of St. Paul has a second granddaughter at the College - Charlotte Hart. The first, also named Nanette, graduated in '78 and is now at the University of Virginia working toward her Ph.D. Grandmother says, "They both love Dartmouth."
George and Ginny Newman took a long trip from their summer home in Mattapoisett, Mass., to Sarasota, Fla. - 23 days and 3,400 miles through New England, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. Ginny went to Boston in June as a delegate to the A.A.U.W. 100th anniversary convention and is now trying to get ERA passed in Florida. George has his men's discussion group going and they report a beautiful Xmas dinner-dance put on by the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota. Don Moore and Bill Bunting also attended.
Chuck MacMillan writes from Rock Island, Ill., that his son Rick has returned from California to Franklin Lakes, N.J., and is currently secretary of the class of 1966. Chuck also reports a good visit last spring with Ruth Tucker in Tryon, N.C.
Darden Rozycki of Norwich, daughter of Ford and Gertie Whelden, has been named coordinator of volunteer services for West Central New Hampshire Community Mental Health Services, which runs centers in Lebanon, Hanover, Newport, and Claremont. She is also active as a board member of the Hanover A.B.C. program.
Perk and Kay Fitch gave their annual cocktail party at the Norwich Inn before Xmas. Classmates present were Larry and Dot Leavitt, Rad and Velma Tanzer, Gertie Whelden, and Hal and Caroline Stevens. Two of Perk's daughters were also on hand.
