When Ralph and Sally Church arrived in the Sarasota area January 31 for a three-month visit, Ralph discovered that Sarasota has an active Dartmouth Club which meets for lunch on the second and fourth Tuesdays at the Crown Restaurant. He showed up at the February 9 meeting and was delighted to find Don Solis, George Klein, John Nixon, and Wes Wood there.
At Ralph's suggestion, a mini-reunion of seven '28ers was held at lunchtime on February 19 at a restaurant on Siesta Key, with Ralph getting the crowd together and insisting on picking up the tab. Also present were Rappie Bavier, Lane Dwinell, Hammie Hammesfahr, George Klein, John Nixon, and Don Solis. Wes Wood missed the gathering due to a snag in communictions. Lane Dwinell had just arrived a few days earlier for two weeks in Bradenton en route home from a six-week visit to California.
John Phillips received a card from Rick and Hilda Rickenbaugh in St. Croix thanking him for recommending the Phillips's favorite vacation spot. Rick said, "Golf, beaches, and climate perfect."
"Van" Van Riper writes to thank me for his birthday card, saying, "Not much to report from here. We're very quiet Kay had a mild stroke last June and our activities have been somewhat limited as a result."
George and Lisa Emery took their third freighter trip, this time 45 days to the east coast of South America, all the way to Buenos Aires, with stops in Paraguay, Santos, Rio de Janeiro, and other ports in Brazil. They have booked their next freighter trip to Africa for next summer. Their first freighter trip several years ago was to the Mediterranean, the second down the west coast of South America as far as Peru.
If you are interested in freighter trips, write to George, or to Wat Dickerman (he and Eleanor have explored the world for 20 years on freighters). Other experts on that cheap, leisurely way of travel are Bill and Emelyn Rohlffs and Vic and Mary Hartjens.
Mutt Jennings has had a busy fall and winter. He was occupied part of the winter putting together a 64-page program for the U.S. Men's Curling Championship, which he helped to put on in March. In the fall he was elected a trustee emeritus of the Boston Symphony after 24 years of service. He and Bunty enjoyed a six-week cruise in November and December which took them from San Francisco to Acapulco and down the west coast of South America. Their visit to Cuzco and Machu Picchu was particularly outstanding. The cruise continued through the Strait of Magellan and up the east coast to Ft. Lauderdale. They enjoyed lots of rest and the first real duplicate bridge since Mutt quit the game in 1933.
Dick Schmelzer writes: "Each month during the winter season I have lunch with Ollie and Dolly Andrus. We are still among the younger members of the Clearwater Dartmouth Alumni Club. A few days ago I swam a third of a mile along the beach in 72-degree water I went with the current, of course.
Whit and Nancy Whittemore and their long-haired dachshund are heading for Tucson for a month or so. Usually they get away earlier, but it has taken until now for all three to get healthy at the same time. Whit retired ten years ago as vice president and trust officer of the First National Bank of Duluth.
Brad Parker has moved to Apt. C-20, 64 Avonwood Road, Avon, Conn. 06001. Brad has been hospitalized twice in the past year.
I wrote Jim McConnon to ask whether he lives half the time in Tucson and the rest of the time in Winona, Minn. He replied that he and Cynthia live in Tucson year round, and when it is hot he hikes at 8,000-feet elevations, where it is cool. They take short trips such as to Vacation Village in San Diego or to the Santa Fe Opera, with Indian artifact stops along the way.
Vera Littlewood's husand Graham died November 19 in Gladwyne, Pa. Classmates will recall that Vera married Graham after her first husband, '28er John Flanagan, died in 1959- Vera is very much a part of the '28 family, having been in charge of fund-raising among class widows after John's death. We extend our sympathy to her and to Graham's family.
