Last month's notes led off with a reference to a local newspaper article containing news of interest to classmates in 1935. This month there follows a story from a similar source. I'm indebted to Nate Whiteside, head agent of 1920, for a clipping from the Hinsdale, Ill., Doings. It seems that Bob Morris, who chairs the First National Bank of Hinsdale and is a public servant in many important ways, has recently been appointed to the board of trustees of the Hinsdale Sanitary District.
It happened that I received this word on the very day of attending, here in Eastman, the 85th birthday of Pat Holbrook, also of 1920. Pat was the coach of our 1931 undefeated freshman football team, captained by Bill Clark and including the aforementioned Bob Morris and 35 or so more of you. Pat recalled the final game of that season, with Princeton, which was won by Bill's drop-kick for the 3-0 win! At the half, Pat received a wire telling that his wife, expecting, had been taken to Mary Hitchcock Hospital. He says he wasn't much good to the team after that, a fact which Bill Clark confirmed, but they won and presented him the game ball. Son Dave was born the following morning. Joining in at the birthday party for his dad, there was Dave 50 years later!
In our senior year Pat was an assistant varsity coach in Earl Blaik's first year. The '35 lettermen were captain Jack Hill, Don Hagerman, Yank Price, Mike Ritter, Herb Stearns, Jim Aieta, Bill Clark, Harry Deckert, Gene Burnkrant, Dick Carpenter, and Norm Rand. Pat and his wife Nancy are very active and are here at Eastman in Grantham, N.H., much of the time. I think he'd like nothing better than to hear from some of his charges of 50 years ago!
Somewhere near these notes you will find an excellent photograph of four alumni kindly furnished me by Herb Roth '52. Bucks Weil and ugh Uh34lman '37 were roommates at Dartmouth, where Hugh met Bucks's sister, whom he later married. The two families vacation frequently together and were oh one such visit to Antigua. There they met for the first time Herb Roth and Sam Williams '40, guests of the same resort but traveling separately. A snap of the camera and we see our friend the cotton broker TOrn Montgomery, Ala.! Quoting Herb: "He and his wife also still play a strong, mean game of tennis."
Representing Dartmouth College at the inauguration of the new president of Baldwin Wallace College was classmate Don Fraser of Cleveland.
Our retiring Dartmouth trustee, Ralph Lazarus, who chairs the board of Federated Department Stores Inc., has just received Cincinnati's highest community honor. Ralph was presented the "Great Living Cincinnatian" award on the basis of "community service, business and civic attainment, leadership, awareness of the needs of others, and distinctive accomplishments." Congratulations, Ralph. We're all very proud of you!
From Fort Lauderdale, Will Kempton writes that he and Mary will be back again this summer at "Green Tops," their cabin, cottage, camp site, etc. location on Lake Winnipesaukee. Sounds like a nice spot to visit in Alton, N.H.!
Not retiring and, seemingly, not likely to be any time soon, Charlie Nayor sent a note from his office high above Boston at One Longfellow Place. His trial practice, particularly in the field of medical malpractice litigation, is "busier than ever." Newspapers carried the story of a recent major settlement arranged by Charlie. Perhaps not unrelated, he writes: "Were in St. Maarten in November, Montego Bay in January, and now getting ready for an early Marchtrip to trip to Acapulco!"
In the interest of accuracy and at the request of the host, I must correct some unintended "mis-speak" in my report in an earlier issue of a certain pre-game luncheon last November. Ted Steele's nephew Peter is not and never has been married. On the other hand, Howie Croninger, who was listed as in attendance, was accompanied by his wife Mary, who was not listed. In spite of these errors, it is indeed accurate to say that we all had a great time! During a recent weekend on Cape Cod, I got in touch with A1 Dodd indefagable agent. Plans for this year's Alumni Fund will be running smoothly as you read this. Think early about responding early! A1 nd his helpers shouldn't have to be looking for you in June! That's for someone else!
