For a year or so now, our 50th reunion chairman, Don Radasch, has been at work on plans for that big event in June of 1985. Don has now announced the make-up of his committee. The officers are: John Wallace, vice chairman; Al Brush, treasurer; Reg Bankart and Dero Saunders, co-chairmen of publicity; Bob Naramore, regional chairman; and Bob Richter, chairman of reunion giving. Art Bamford will be in charge of pictures, and a variety of other assignments will be handled by Jim Boldt, George Colton, Hall Colton, Howie Croninger, Harry Ferries, Bill Fitzhugh, Bob Hage, Don Hagerman, Bob McLellan, Dick Muzzy, Al Sherwood, and Helen Wallace. You'll be in good hands in June 1985!

Those of you in attendance at our fall reunion will have heard more of the plans, and of course much will be said and done as the time approaches. Just be sure you intend to be there!

Perhaps the top class of 1935 news over the summer was the establishment at the Tuck School of an endowed Management Communication Fund in honor of Dero Saunders. Prime movers in setting up the program, unbeknownst to Dero, were his sons David '63 and Richard '69. Help came from Ralph Lazarus and many associated with Dero at Forbes magazine and in other ways. The presentation was made at Tuck School on June 3 by Dean West, who said in part, "It is most fitting that this fund bear Mr. Saunders's name. He has had a long and productive career as a respected financial writer, senior editor, and executive editor of Forbes magazine." This quote from the official announcement gives an idea of the value of the new program: "Income from the Dero A. Saunders Fund will be used to develop special curriculum materials on management communication and to support guest speakers from corporations and the news media."

A highlight of the June meeting of the Alumni Council was the presentation of the Dartmouth Alumni Award to Ralph Lazarus. The lead sentences of that citation hint at the tribute to our classmate, of whom we are all so justly proud: "How in the limited compass of a few words can one do justice to the praiseworthy use you have made of your life? Master merchant, industrial statesman, public servant, supporter of education and social causes, generous benefactor all these are part of the Ralph Lazarus success story."

Our most traveled classmate by far is Pug Atherton, along with his wife Burta. They came this summer from Honolulu to the Horizons program at Dartmouth, but that was only the beginning. For then it was off from New York to Iceland to pick up a two-month cruise on the Lindblad Explorer to Greenland and the northern Canadian islands. Following this they were returning to Montreal for a trans-continental train trip to the West Coast and thence home. Another planned trip includes a return to the country of Bhutan and later a west-toeast transit of Asia on the Trans-Siberian Railroad! You can hardly think of a capital city large or small anywhere in the world where they have not been!

Dartmouth's Alumni College attracted two classmate couples this year: Wayne and Skip Geib and Don and Margaret Radasch.

Several of Mini-Reunion Chairman Harry Ferries's class gatherings this fall will have taken place by the time you read this, but there should still be time for you to join Bob Naramore after the Yale game on October 29. He will once again arrange for a dutch treat class dinner after the Yale game. This will be at Rapp's Restaurant in Ansonia, CT (at Routes 34 and 8, north from the Yale Bowl). Contact Bob at his new home, 155 Brewster Street, Bridgeport, 06695, or call him at 203/579- 0224.

I'm indebted to our former class secretary, Dick Montgomery, for a few notes he picked up during the Alumni Fund telethon. After extended serious illness it is indeed wonderful to know he is well on the way to good health again!

"Caught Ernie Hedler during a family gettogether involving three Ernies: his son, grandson, and himself. Ernie suffered a minor stroke three or four months ago, but is recovering splendidly. Only impairment was to his speech, but if he hadn't mentioned it I wouldn't have known. Talks quite normally now, though he says it's a struggle.

"AlClark had a serious heart attack in December, with quintuple by-pass. But has made remarkable comeback. Had just come off the golf course when I called.

"Jim Petrequin reports he and his wife will be in Scandinavia in August. Over the years, they have been working their way north through Europe, starting in Italy and Greece. North Pole next?

"Bob Kuhns says he has no plans to retire ever. Currently concerned with the operation of some 35 small companies, most of them in the wholesale equipment field. Also several investment companies. Says he is working harder than ever, but without some of the pressures."

More news on the local front! The 1935 delegation in the Upper Valley has again added another couple. Yank and June Price now are living in a condominium near George and Ruth Colton. Our friendly rivalry with Florida and Cape Cod continues!

Ralph Lazarus '35 had added to his 1965 honorary degree an Alumni Award, with his receipt of the latter honor in June. He was lauded as a "master merchant" for his 25 years as president or chairman of Federated Department Stores; as a "public servant" for his community service with a broad range of civic groups in Cincinnati; as a "supporter of education and social causes" for his work on national study committees .on public schools, metropolitan transportation, and the economy; and as a "generous benefactor" for his Dartmouth service including as a trustee for 14 years, as an Alumni Councilor, as chairman of the Alumni Fund, and as a Tuck overseer.

Willard Heckel '35 was the guest of honor at adinner last spring attended by over 400 admirers, wishing him well upon his retirement from37 years of teaching at the Rutgers School ofLaw. He also served as dean from 1963 to1970, and was honored upon his retirement bythe establishment of a teaching endowment in hisname at the school.
