Because the doorbell has rung with a bit more frequency during the summer, now almost passed, the news of '40s is fresh and interesting and will be relayed to you as space permits.
During the summer we learned from his daughter Dee that Fred Michel succumbed to cancer during January of this year. His obituary will appear in this or a susequent issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. For the past several years, Fred had made his home in Santa Barbara, CA. We were saddened to learn also that Jack O'Shea's wife, Dottie, and Howie Stockwell's wife, Jane, had passed away recently. To each and to their families, the heartfelt sympathies of the class are expressed.
Members of the class are on the move again. You may want to dust off the Alumni Directory and incorporate the following changes of address. Via word processor, Don Fox reports his present address as P.O. Box 786, Pinehurst, NC 28374. Don retired in May of 1982 and "began the starting-over process . . . with enthusiasm after some 35 years of corporate life. Because I had a place on an excellent golf course in North Carolina, it immediately became headquarters. The final decision as to whether it will really be here or Florida is yet to be made." Don adds, "There has been absolutely no fear of facing free time every day. Positively great. The world is a most interesting place. Took a Dartmouth Alumni trip to Indonesia, Singapore, and Hong Kong last March. Quite a change from the European scene." Last year, Don purchased an Apple computer to bring himself into the eighties technologically. He is self-taught in its use, "a fine challenge to fill any vacuum that might develop between the ears." Wife Nancy is winding up her affairs, as a senior vice president in real estate, and will join Don in the leisure-time move soon.
A move is a move, even if it is as little as. a quarter of a mile. Henceforth, Cec Moore will be residing at: 17563 St. Andrews Drive, Poway, CA 92064. In his letter, Cec describes the location of his new home as being on. the 17 th tee of the Stoneridge Country Club, where the Moores spend a great deal of time (that has to be close to the 19th hole!). It sounds like a lovely home, "high and with a view forever ..." Recently, Cec sold the travel agency he acquired on retiring, reasoning that he is too busy with friends, travel, and golf to look after it properly. Enjoy!
In an effort to make living easier, Bob and Trudi Williams Have forsaken their residence of so many years in favor of a one-floor dwelling. Your cards and letters of encouragement will be most appreciated at Dr. Bob's new home at 3544 Lynnfield Road, Shaker Heights, OH 44122. Bob has always met the challenges of his profession, or, extra-curricularly in the great outdoors. The latest, his battle with Alzheimer's, is his greatest. He is blessed with great support from a tireless Trudi. During the summer, the Williamses shared the joy of their daughter Debbie's wedding to Don Grotts; it was held in the garden of their home with family and close friends joining them.
While on the subject of garden weddings, Tom and Joan Braden gave second daughter, Susan '77, in marriage to Larry Zarker at the end of June at their Chevy Chase, MD, home. The tongue-in-cheek gossip column reaching my desk reported, "Everybody beginning with B turned out, not to mention at least eight Bradens. Chic? Susan wore Tom's granny's old lace, restored to a fare-thee-well."
On that busy Saturday, the 17th of September, while Dartmouth is taming the Princeton Tiger and a great outpouring of other '40s reune in Hanover, Harry and Lenore Howard will be escorting youngest daughter Lori down the aisle in Greenwich, CT, to become Mrs. Peter G. Thomas. Lori graduated cum laude in 1981 from Occidental College and is an account executive and assistant to the owner of a gourmet marketplace with restaurants, a bakery, and a wholesale division in Phoenix, AZ.
In closing, it's hats-off time to two class stalwarts. First, to Ted Miller for directing the class's Alumni Fund efforts, achieving a great 78-percent participation rate and registering $111,518 in the till for Dartmouth. Similarly, Stet Whitcher is singled out for his continuing devotion in serving as treasurer and for having succeeded in generating a tidy budget surplus for the fiscal year. Collectively, we say "thank you" to the two of you for a job well done.
We'll have been in Hanover for the minireunion and hope to have seen many of you there. Until November . . .
