I include a recent note from Dave Mandelbaum: "A bit of sad news to report. Elaine Wright, wife of classmate Frank Wright, passed away in late July. She had been ill with a mysterious lung disease for the past year. Elaine had dated Frank not only during the four years at Hanover, but throughout their years at Teaneck High School (they were Rosemary's classmates there), Elaine was a remarkable person vibrant, caring, a wonderful friend, and, at the end, extraordinarily courageous. An extremely moving memorial service was held for Elaine on July 24. Other Dartmouth people in attendance were Tom Sayles and John Clayton 51, whose wife was Elaine's college roommate."
Anthony Lukeman of the U.S. Marine Corps, formerly a brigadier general and director of the manpower, plans, and policy division at Marine Corps headquarters in Washington, DC, was recently twice honored: He was promoted to the rank of major general, and then, shortly afterwards, installed as commander of the Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton. Tony is not the only '54 who is a Marine Corps general; Brigadier General Edwin Godfrey is the commanding general of the Third Force Service Support Group, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, located principally in Okinawa, Japan.

This position is a voluntary one and one Doug held during the past year in addition to his normal post as executive vice president of Mercantile Safe Deposit and Trust Company in Baltimore. Doug had an extraordinary year as president since his role included travel to many of RMA's 38 chapters and 25 subchapters, nationwide, meeting and visiting with key lending personnel in RMA member banks, discussing commercial lending activities with members of the press and other interested parties, and making numerous speeches on RMA's behalf.

The London Times, in late May, carried a feature story about Dean Berry, chairman of the Centre for Business Strategy at the London Business School. The article stated that the centre now boasts the largest team world-wide of academic researchers in the practical area of business policy and competitive strategies. Dean pointed out that the centre "has more fire power intellectually than even the Harvard Business School and that "the Centre expects to make an impact at national as well as company level. We shall be controversial and I think we should be," said Dean. "If the Departmem of Industry, say, produces a plan for a sector which we believe doesn't stand up, then we would say so." The article concluded by noting that in this period of declining British competitiveness, Dean believes there is a need to demonstrate the application of stategic ideas and concepts to problems by real firms.
