The pace of news leading up to our 25th reunion year is quickening keep it up! Here are my latest gatherings:
Fritz Arens reports from Columbus, Ohio, that he is sales representative with V. Mueller and Company, a division of American Hospital Supply Corporation. Fritz joined Mueller 20 years, ago after serving three and half years in the Navy. He was recognized for "Sales of the Year" in 1982. He and his family (wife Carol and four children ranging in age from eight to 16) enjoy summer vacations on Cape Cod. Fritz says that he continues to be a sports enthusiast.
Steve Spalding has been appointed senior vice president, finance, at Investment Mortgage International Inc., based in San Francisco. How does it feel, Steve, for a former banker to now be on the other side of the table from the bankers? Congratulations.
Carlos Plummer wrote from Sacramento, Calif., saying that he and his family were in England from January to July in 1982, during which time he was affiliated with Oxford University's geology department: "Working mainly on rocks collected from Antarctica. Bill Hotchkiss and his wife visited us briefly. We enjoyed England and spent several weeks traveling on the Continent. Prior to England, I had spent several months in the Southern Hemisphere on an Antarctic research project. I led a team of five geologists from New Zea-land, Australia, and America on a geological investigation of the Daniels Range. We covered some 400 miles during our six weeks in the field using motor toboggans and skis, doing our own cooking and logistical support. I shared a tent with Scott Babcock '63, geology professor at Western Washington University, who is pictured with me in our cooking and radio center tent. [The great photograph, which Carlos also sent along, is reproduced near this column.] My textbook on physical geology is in its second edition (I am working on the third) and doing well enough that I might even be able to make it back for reunion next year."
Barlow Nelson states that his figure-skating activities continue alongside his law practice, which is based in Tulsa, Olka. "I have been selected as a leader for the figure-skating team at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia." You see, some of us keep fit! Well done, Barlow.
Another career change: Wallace Berry left teaching and academia two years ago to start with a local San Jose, Calif., firm specializing in commercial property management. He is currently with Cold well Banker, working on developing business and new property management with the office in San Mateo. He says: "I plan to attend reunion in June 1984!"
I am extremely sad to report that Elihu "Brud" Hedges's son, David, 18, was killed in an automobile accident last June 18. David, who, like his two older brothers, was an accomplished soccer and hockey player, had planned to enroll at Denison University this Fall. Brad's other sons, Scott and Timothy, 20, are both now Dartmouth undergraduates.
Our Norwegian classmate, Einar Kloster, writes that he is presently in the process of finalizing 18 months of commuting between Brazil and Norway. "Our youngest daughter finished high school in Norway this year and Betty stayed with Elizabeth so as to give her a fair chance at exams. Elizabeth is going to Amherst (she did not want to do the same as her sister Anniken '84 and I) and Betty has joined me in Brazil. Glad it is over!"
