Autumn is here! We find ourselves at that annual turn in the calendar which seems to catch many of us off guard. Suddenly, we're looking back at a summer that has vanished but, I would expect, holds many pleasant memories of family vacations and possibly a somewhat slower working pace. Looking ahead, we have autumn and with it a tremendously accelerated pace of life punctuated by the start-up of school. United Fund drives, P.T.A. meetings, scout outings and who knows what else. In many ways, it's a rejuvenating time of the year . . . and a time for football!

The class of '59 will host two mini-reunions this fall. The first will be in Williamsburg, Va., where Dartmouth plays William and Mary on October 11. Mike Hurd has arranged for 60 rooms at the Holiday Inn West, 902 Richmond Road, where there will be a hospitality suite open to the class from Friday, October 10, to Sunday the 12th. On Saturday, a pre-game luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. in a tent adjacent to William and Mary Hall, this being hosted by the Dartmouth Club of Central Virginia. After the game there will be a reception beginning at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. at the Williamsburg Lodge along with a special program. On Sunday there will be a Dartmouth seminar, beginning at 9:30 a.m., presented by Jere Daniel '55, Dartmouth professor of history, and by Thad Tate, director of The Institute of Early American History. This will take place at Williamsburg Lodge and be followed by a tour of the restoration.

The following weekend, October 17-18, Dartmouth will host Harvard in Hanover. Not only is this Dartmouth Night weekend, but it also is the focal point of the College's salute to 100 years of Dartmouth football, as well as another '59 mini-reunion. A block of rooms has been reserved for '59s at the White River Junction Holiday Inn. Dartmouth Night festivities begin on Friday evening, and we hope a good number of you will make an effort to attend this gathering.

Turning to '59's Alumni Fund succcess, MikeHellman deserves a special salute coincident with his officially turning over the reins as head agent to Bill Colehower. Mike has served loyally as head agent for the past six years and managed to achieve a most noteworthy improvement in our class's performance. The 1980 fund results are in and '59 contributed $83,269 to exceed our goal of $73,500 by nearly $9,000! Also, 396 of us participated, or 56 per cent our best-ever performance! Plus, we have set a record for dollars contributed to the Alumni Fund by a class out 21 years. Wow! On behalf of the entire class, we thank you, Mike, for all of your diligent efforts and particularly your conscientious support in getting Bill Colehower and his team off to a fine start. Hats off also to Peter Jaffe for all his fine work as capital gifts coordinator . . . and to all of you who assisted Mike, Bill, and Peter so ably. Everyone deserves congratulations and thanks.

Van Pine, who is our class project director, was encouraged by the enthusiastic response shown by class members for the project he designed. Van plans to bring a number of '59s to Hanover to address or meet with the class of 1984 during each of the four years they are in Hanover. Approximately three or four sessions each year are planned. Of course, the class of 1984 will graduate at the time of our 25th reunion and this should prove a rewarding experience to us as a class in establishing a personal association with another Dartmouth generation. The program has already been ap proved by the involved deans and is now being implemented. Members of 1984 will be actively involved in shaping future aspects of the project, and if anyone wishes to participate or add constructive comment, I know Van would be happy to hear from you.

Congratulations to Cynthia and DavidMarshall who became parents last May 22 when their daughter, Caroline Andrews, was born. As David put it, "New baby, old father!" The Marshalls currently reside near Rochester, N.Y., in Pittsford.

A press clipping informs us that AlanZiegler, who also lives in the Rochester area, has been named chairman of The Rochester Institute of Technology's deferred giving advisory committee whose purpose it is to plan events and activities to familiarize area members of the estate-planning community with R.I.T. Alan is founder of Futures Funding Corporation, an employee-benefit consulting firm, where he serves as vice president and secretary. He is also vice president of the American Society of Chartered Life Underwriters' local chapter and a member of the Estate Planning Council of Rochester.

The Department of the Navy released a note on Jack McLaughlin which indicates that Jack has held on to his Coast Guard commission. Now a commander in the reserves, Jack recently attended a course in Yorktown, Va., designed to prepare senior reserve officers for the task of mobilizing officer and enlisted personnel in case of a national emergency. With the return of draft registration in the U.S.A., you may find yourself busier than you thought, Jack.

A men's fashion article in last June 15th's New York Times Magazine featured DickPress, Dick is thriving as a fourth-generation executive at J. Press, the fashionable men's clothier, which was founded in New York in 1902. The thrust of the article, which quotes Dick, has to do with the happy development this season whereby menswear designers have been inspired by "traditional" styles. This means that more and more men are rediscovering the stores long synonymous with conservative good taste and I would expect sales are booming at J. Press.

Keep up the flow of information. We enjoy hearing from you. In the meantime, see as many of you as possible at our mini-reunions.
