Smoke swirls up the chimney and leaves scatter about as fall is upon us in the Northeast. Spotted at the Dartmouth-Army football game the end of September were Scott Spangenberg and Malcolm Jones and his wife Karen. Malcolm joined the San Francisco office of Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb Inc. after completing a stint in the firm's New York office.
Chuck Bent is a member of the Eastern veterans' circuit, the winter ski tour for senior racers. Beginning in January, the competition continues weekly through March, with a total of 16 races on the winter schedule. Chuck reports that for most members of the circuit, "It's a continuation of something we've done in the past. It's nice to keep that competitive edge." Chuck's father, former Dartmouth assistant ski coach Colby Bent, is a dean of the senior circuit, having been with the tour since 1960. Last season the elder Bent captured three first places and a second in the 35-and- older World Cup races held at Mammoth Mountain, Calif.
Of the eight men and eight women on the United States kayak teams competing last summer in the world white water and wild-water championships in Merano, Italy, four were wearing the Dartmouth green. The four all won qualifying races in the invitational team trials held last spring on the West River course in East Jamaica, Vt. The first race on the West River courses was set by Eric Evans, who nine times was national white water slalom champion. Whitewater slalom competitors from Dartmouth on the U.S. team are Dana Chladek '85 from Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Bruce Swomley '81 from Bloomfield, Conn., Carol Fisher, a third-year M.D. candidate at Dartmouth Medical School from Evanston, Ill., and Billy Nutt '76 from Hanover, N.H.
Bill Brooks is living in Leawood, Kans., where he serves as managing partner of Hyatt Legal Services, a nationwide chain of legal clinics with headquarters in Kansas City, Mo. As managing partner, he oversees the field operation of 125 offices with nearly 300 attorneys throughout the United States. Founded in 1978 by Joel Z. Hyatt '72, the firm joined with H&R Block to open offices in space shared by Block's tax preparation service. Bill joined Hyatt Legal Services in January 1979. In addition to his managing partner responsibilities, he is vice president of Block Management Company, a subsidiary of H&R Block.
